We've been to some of the best gardens around the world, and what a delightful surprise to find the quality and commitment in this effort. Almost 250 acres of well thought out and outstanding landscape architecture. The childrens section is just as much fun for adults. You could easily spend an entire day just enjoying each section, and there's plenty of seating. They have golf trolley tours for the seniors, and are great. Their restaurant is good, though can be a bit crowded, and you have to remember that most of the folks are volunteers, so be patient.

I'm not typically into this type of attraction, but the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens are beautiful. Well thought out (it seems like they spent years planning the design) and well maintained (it's fairly new ... I think it opened in the last 5 years or so ... but everything is well kept and in it's place).

There are structured gardens near the visitor center and miles of well groomed walking trails around the property ... there's even a shuttle if you don't feel like walking back. And for those with kids, there's an area that's based on childrens stories. Well worth the visit.

The friends of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens are to be commended for preserving the gorgeous property on which it sits and for developing it to showcase Maine's habitat and beauty. The maps are easy to use and lead you to various thematic areas of the gardens. Our favorite was the Vayo Meditation Garden. The use of Maine granite, the setting on the hillside overlooking the water, the gorgeous centerpiece reflecting "vessel," all combined for a tremendously restful venue we didn't want to leave. We also liked the whimsical sculptures placed around the gardens, particularly the "pine cone" made from a recycled turbine. Too funny. The gift shop here was excellent, as well. We left some tourist dollars behind with unique purchases in our bag. This was a serendipitous outing--well worth turning off Hwy. 1 to find. If you like arboretums (arboreti?) and botanical gardens, consider joining your local organization for reciprocal benefits around the country.

We loved this place. Formal gardens, less formal gardens, rolling woodland gardens, and forested paths along the waterfront. There's a shuttle, and many of the gardens are handicap accessible. Favorite parts are tough to choose: the Zen-like Meditation Garden, the fairy houses, the hillside rhododendron garden, the ponds and waterfalls, and the excellent indoor/outdoor café. We feared September wouldn't be a good time to visit gardens, but we were so wrong.
