Strolling through spectacular ornamental gardens and traversing miles of waterfront and woodland trails, visitors are delighted by the beautiful plantings, impressive stonework, waterfalls and fountains, and scenic views. It's no wonder the Gardens have been hailed as one of Maine's top three attractions. The Gardens are open 9-5 April 15 - October 31 (open until 6 pm in July and August). “Astonishing... and a private initiative, too.”

All honor to the five families -- not, not THOSE Five Families! -- who, twenty years ago, decided that Maine needed a botanical gardens, and who mortgaged their own homes to get start-up money for it, formed a volunteers society to raise money to buy land, and then to build these absolutely amazing, beautiful, gardens.

Everything is very well done, to a high professional standard.

You learn a lot about the ecology of Maine and the coast at the same time as you are enjoying the very well laid-out plantings. You will be fascinated by the kinetic sculpture in the main grounds, 'Wind Orchid', and there are some striking other sculptures -- a giant steel pine cone, and an iron porcupine -- placed along the walks you can take.

We especially liked the 'Fairy Village' which children can build 'fairy houses' in... a great idea which we will take back to the UK. The food in the cafe is also first-rate.

In short ... you've GOT to see it! Give yourself half a day.

“Beautiful gardens”

The gardens are absolutely beautiful. You could spend hours enjoying each different flower. The restaurant was also great and the gift shop was terrific. It provided a superb day.

“Beautiful trip, friendly and helpful staff, gorgeously preserved nature”
Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

Just came back from a family trip that included this as one of our destinations within coastal Maine. Everything from the shuttles to take you from point to point (this is a considerable property at approximately 250 acres), to the gift shop to the charming children's garden featuring a maze, foot bridges and fountains - this is a worthy trip if visiting the Boothbay area.

“Don't miss this fabulous place!”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

This large garden is an absolute gem! It is creatively designed with something for every age and stage of life to enjoy! The tour guide who took us through one of the several large sections of the garden added so much to what we could have learned on our own. The creative ways of planting, the combinations of plants, water features, rock and wood sculptures all intrigued us. We followed our tour with a delicious lunch on the patio of the café. While there, we saw children having a great time at a birthday party, set-ups being arranged for a wedding, people with special needs being accommodated. Truly this place has been incredibly well designed to be used and enjoyed by everyone...and it is total eye-candy for us all. Thank you to the folks who invested in so many ways to provide this haven!
