Owner description: Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is a natural wonder on 270 acres of shorefront in mid-coast Maine. Strolling through spectacular ornamental gardens and traversing miles of waterfront and woodland trails, visitors are delighted by the beautiful plantings, impressive stonework, waterfalls and fountains, and scenic views. It's no wonder the Gardens have been hailed as one of Maine's top three attractions. The Gardens are open 9-5 April 15 - October 31 (open until 6 pm in July and August). There is a cafe and gift shop on site. A visit at any time is a memorable experience.

“Fantastic for Kids too!”

Very impressive place! Beautiful landscaping and easy to navigate. This was one of our favorite times in Maine, even with a baby and a toddler.
The children's garden is amazing - although we waited too long and it was naptime by the time we reached it. Oh well. There is a lot to do for little ones, they can touch, play, and see lots of plants and plant life.
Bring bug spray!! and water or snacks if you want, but yes - there is a cafe with sandwiches, coffee and drinks.
The garden is well maintained. Even if not everything is blooming (which is probably intentional to have some blooms in every season) it is a gorgeous place, makes you forget where you are - so pretty and calm.
It's a large woodsy place, but small enough to walk without feeling exhausted. Shuttle service too, although we didn't use that.
Worth the price to be here even for a couple hours.

“One of the best botanical gardens in the US”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

This place is amazing for its variety of plants and their display, especially considering it was started only a few years ago.

The central campus has very interesting areas including a childrens' garden (which adults shouldn't miss) and an extraordinary five senses garden. The more remote offerings can require a hike but there are shuttles which travel some of the larger trails.

I especially liked the hillside switchbacks down to the Meditation Garden, seeing a variety of favorite New England natives beautifully massed.

Get there early (9am) to beat the crowds!

“Beautiful, stunning experience for everyone”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

We had the opportunity to visit the Maine Botanical Gardens outside Boothbay Harbor over the July 4 weekend and have to say it was huge, beautiful and well-kept -- definitely worth a lengthy visit. This garden covers several hundred acres and features wide plant and tree variety. The rhododendron garden, with its perennials and breathtaking water falls, is worth the extra walking effort to see and enjoy. We can't speak to how it might look in January, but in July it for sure is not only worth the trip, but worth the admission. Go.

“Beautifully landscaping”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

We were there on a 90+ degree day so definitely recommend taking bottled water with you. The grounds were beautifully manicured, however, majority of plants hadn't bloomed yet...needed another couple of weeks and some rain. The map doesn't match up with the grounds, nor is the signage good. The cafe served excellently healthy food and was the best part of the visit.

“I'm not even a gardener...”

This is a fun and beautiful place to spend some time. There are really interesting programs for young kids (fairy-house building, bug detection, chicken feeding, etc) and gorgeous walks, a lovely cafe which sells wine and beer (I had two cups of the delicious non-diary butternut squash soup) and a great gift shop. I recommend this place if you love flowers, gardens (this was the nicest botanical garden I've ever been to) or if you have young kids and want a nice environment for them to play in. (Check out the programs in advance, so you don't miss something really fun.) If it's a hot day, check out the beach at Barrett Park on Lobster Cove Road for a great (inlet) place for kids to swim.
