“Knickerbocker Hill”

The Botanical Gardens – I grew up in this area with my grandparent living just over the hill on the “Back River” shore. The land that has been set aside 248 acres and the beautiful garden that have been developed in the last 10 year is truly amazing. The colors and texture blend so perfectly well. This garden is designed for all ages – The Boothbay Region is truly blessed having this piece of paradise in their own”backyard.”

“A good "destination" activity”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

The layout of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is beautifully orchestrated. The artwork in the gardens is spectacular, too. Plan to spend time watching the movement of several of the garden sculptures. You will be mesmerized. Visiting the Gardens is a good "destination" event for the day. There is a lot to see for a wide age range of patrons. Not too crowded this time of year, yet it is apparent the facility gets good traffic. Staff is friendly and helpful. We missed eating in the cafe; next time. My husband and I walked to the Gardens from downtown Boothbay Harbor; about 7 miles round trip. By the time we toured the Gardens, we had close to a 10-mile day. If you decide to walk, be sure to take a GPS and be prepared to walk single file on sections of the busier roads as there is not much shoulder. It would be great to have a walking trail or bike path to the Gardens from downtown.

“What a wonderful surprise!”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

I am a backyard gardener and had planned on taking in the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens while visiting Boothbay Harbor. I did not expect it to be so very large, informative, inspirational and interesting! It was a delightful afternoon . We were going to skip the Childrens Garden because we were tired and thought there wouldn't be much to it and it ended up we enjoyed that the most!!!

“Must See”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

If you are at all botanically inclined, this is the place to visit. Outstanding gardens with many native plants and well-placed sculpture (much of it for sale). Trails in the Maine woods..full of mosses and lichens..and a Fairy Forest where children of all ages are encouraged to build fairy houses. Utterly charming.
Well equipped for the less-than-mobile..scooter chairs for rent, and trolley service. Easy walking for those who hike..

There also seem to be myriad activities for children, in a special children's garden. I was not with children, but it looks as if it would be a great family outing. There is a cafe there with good food, and a small gift shop.
