Owner description: Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is a natural wonder on 270 acres of shorefront in mid-coast Maine. Strolling through spectacular ornamental gardens and traversing miles of waterfront and woodland trails, visitors are delighted by the beautiful plantings, impressive stonework, waterfalls and fountains, and scenic views. It's no wonder the Gardens have been hailed as one of Maine's top three attractions. The Gardens are open 9-5 April 15 - October 31 (open until 6 pm in July and August). There is a cafe and gift shop on site. A visit at any time is a memorable experience.

I admire the vision of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. What a beautiful place! The grounds are covered with a vast variety of botanticals. There is a wonderful area for children to explore! An old fashioned water pump was a big hit with our granddaughter, she could fill the bucket and water some flowers. There was also an area where the children could see the transition of the to frog. Kids and water!!! There were mazes and play houses and nooks for seating all around the acreage. They also have a separate dog walking area. They offer guided tours and transportation around the property pheriphery if needed. What a perfect place to walk! I envy the locals that can frequent the park. There is a small fee, we had passes. Locals can purchase a membership.

While rating the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens a "4" bucks the tide, we very much enjoyed the day. We loved the gardens, the flowers, the reflexology labyrinth, the utilization of hardscaping and sculpture, the children's garden, the ornamental grasses ... all of it.

But there was very little to learn about Coastal Maine. The Gardens featured many European, Asian and popular species seen in ornamental gardens throughout the northeastern countryside. If you're an avid gardener and unconcerned about non-native and invasive species, bring a notebook. The variety of hosta is quite impressive.

If you're interested in the local ecology, you'll be disappointed. One docent mentioned two new areas have recently been added to the Botanical Gardens specifically for native habitat preservation and education, though as of yet, they have not been developed.

The entry fee for the attraction was $12. In our experience, that's the high side of botanical gardens. Plan to "see it all." Make a hiking day through the undeveloped areas' trails, and you're sure to get your money's worth.

An amazing botanical experience!! The gardens are amazing!! Well designed and maintained trails wind through the acres of the gardens lined by the colorful assortment of New England's diverse botanical heritage. The gardens have wonders for both old and young alike. More than a single day is needed to see the diversity that the Gardens provide.
