Holidae House Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 16 Bethel B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence

(written by my husband -because he's the writer in the family ;-))

A beautiful B&B with a delightful host, Laurence Austin. It was my wife's first stay in a Bed and Breakfast and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting. Tin ceilings, layered wallpaper, and a rich, early 20th century feel made the experience one to remember. For breakfast we had had our choice of the menu and went with Laurence's specialty, French Toast with REAL maple syrup; delicious! After breakfast, I had a chance to talk with Laurence and we would probably still be talking but, unfortunately it was time to leave. If you're near Bethel, this is the place to stay. I look forward to visiting again. Oh, and I almost forgot, we called on the day of our stay and took advantage of the Carpe Diem policy, which gave us a reduced rate on the room! P.S. Laurence, thanks for the book suggestion, "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson, I really enjoyed it.

~ Ok, I just have to add my 2 cents ~
My husband forgot to mention the warm, fresh ginger scones that Laurence presented to us as we arrived for breakfast, with the tiniest little porcelain dish that was just big enough to hold a pat of sweet butter, along with the array of teas, coffee, orange juice, homemade granola, cereals, breads, etc! It reminded me of breakfast in England, where you sit and enjoy the morning, preparing for the day -not a hurried poptart that you grab on your way to Dunkin's. We stayed in the first room on the left -room 6, which is a spacious room with a comfy queen sized bed, and a large, private bathroom (no door, just a curtain -but it was fine). In the living room, Laurence invited us to help ourselves a nightcap, and to be sure to let him know if we needed anything during our stay. I did need some ice after hours, and all it took was a buzz on the intercom and he was pleased to fill an ice-bucket for me.

As my husband said, this was my first B&B. I've been to England & Wales, and I just love that quaint, old-world feeling. I've checked out other B&Bs online, and I'm so afraid of being disappointed. Well now the bar has been set... I, too, look forward to our next chance to Carpe Diem!!

As part of a road trip- we rolled into Bethel with nowhere to stay. This was recommended by our guide book and we were delighted with it- especially with their "Carpe Diem" deal- if you rock up with no reservation and they have vacancies you get the room at a steal. Our room was really charming - decorated in an anitque style- our ensuite had stained glass windows. The host Laurence is English (and so they have a huge selection of tea, big plus for me) he was so hospitable and kind, offering us freshly baked cookies when we arrived. There were even a number of bottles in the lounge so that you could have a night-cap before sleeping in their comfortable beds. Breakfast was a interesting and wide selection for such a small establishment. Wonderful!

What a wonderful place. It was easy to see why it's rated number 1 in Bethel. Lawrence was an excellent host. We enjoyed our morning visit so much with him so much that we were disappointed when he went to make breakfast. The room great. We would definitely stay there again if we where passing through the area.

This is the place to stay in Bethel. The inn is clean, quaint and homey, and all the rooms are comfortable with handsome antiques. Your host Laurence will welcome you with cookies in the afternoon and an after dinner drink in the evening, if you desire. There are restaurants within walking distance. You will have your choice of breakfast options, with your host accomodating to special requests. There is stimulating conversation if you wish, or peace and solitude. Quietly elegant, but as welcoming as grandma's. In other words, the perfect B&B. Look no further.

We decided to hike Puzzle Mountain (Loop Trail) and Step Falls in Newry and stay in Bethel for the evening. While contacting several inns/hotels to discuss availability, amenities and rates, we made the acquaintance of the wonderful Lawrence. He and his wife, Marcia, are the Holidae House innkeepers. Speaking with Lawrence by phone (while sipping Hot Toddies in front of the fire at the Bethel Inn), he was incredibly polite (love the English accent!) and didn't seem to mind in the least that we had waited until 7:30 p.m. to begin making decisions about where to stay for the night. In addition to describing the Holidae House to us, Lawrence was quick to fill us in on local restaurant choices and evening entertainment options. Lawrence's warmth won us over and we ended up staying at the Holidae House for the evening. Warm chocolate chip cookies awaited us when we arrived and Lawrence quickly showed us to our beautifully decorated (and very clean) room. We dined at Sud's Pub, just two short blocks from the Holidae House and were treated to an evening of great music by Denny Breau. We also enjoyed a nightcap upon our return, compliments of the Holidae House. A great evening preceding a fabulous breakfast offering homemade buttermilk cinnamon french toast (FANTASTIC!), eggs (any style), bacon, sausage, apple scones, fresh fruit, homemade granola, cereal, juice, coffee and a robust selection of teas. A hiker's dream breakfast to be certain. :-) Lawrence and Marcia have created something very special in the Holidae House experience and we hope to be back someday soon! Thank you!!

We are so grateful for the wonderful reviews that we have received over the last several months. We appreciate that our guests take their time following a stay with us to submit a review. In today's economy in particular, we are working hard to promote our B&B and the positive reviews help us immensely. We never take for granted the goodwill we have shared while meeting and getting to know our guests. Thank you to all who have written reviews! We are looking forward to Spring and Summer visitors. All our Best, Laurence and Marcia

This was our second trip to Bethel and our first at the Holidae House. We like to try new places every year (since we only get to getaway 1 night a year) but we will definitely be back here next year. Like everyone else has said, Laurence is amazing. He makes you feel comfortable and very welcomed. The room was bright and big (room 2). Bigger than most of the B&B's we have stayed in. The Breakfast was great. You have to try Laurence's french toast. It's perfectly located you can walk to any of the restaurants or to the food store right across the street. We liked the place so much we wanted to stay another night but we had to get back to our little ones. Maybe next year, we will make it two nights.

Austin's is on the main street of Bethel, with great restaurants and entertainment within walking distance. It's a quick drive to the mountain for skiing, or the Mountain Explorer shuttle will take you there. Laurence's breakfasts were great (yes, have the french toast)and our room was comfortable as well. We took advantage of afternoon tea and really enjoyed the time we spent chatting with Laurence. Marcia was out of town for part of our stay, but we did get to meet Annie, their sweet rescue poodle. Gemütlichkeit is the word auf Deutsch which best describes Austin's Holidae House - cozy, comfortable. Stay here. You'll surely have a wonderful time.
