After spending a night in the comfortable yet impersonal Sunday River lodging, my friend Danielle and I were looking for a place with a little more of a homey, typical New England feel, and boy did we get lucky!!
The Inn is less than 7 minutes from Sunday River in the middle of "idyllic" Bethel, Maine. When we arrived at 8pm, we were instantly received warmly by Fred and the inn's playful pet dog Mike. He showed us our room, made sure to address any immediate concerns we had and gave us the pertinent info for our stay, including making sure to tell us not to miss the great breakfast (which we heard includes the country's best french toast!).
Our room was very comfortable, immaculate, appointed with all of the necessary elements (as well as flat-screen large tv's!) and a wonderfully soft and warm bed. After getting cleaned up, it was not hard to fall into a deep sleep.
When we rose in the morning and went down to breakfast, Fred was their to take our orders-down to the type of jam, mind you. 10 minutes later after fresh-cut fruit, homemade muffins, coffee and OJ, I had one of the best omelettes I'd ever had. Fred's wife Sandra was there to say hi and both of these individuals were truly friendly , gracious and classy individuals, even chatting with us about their world travels and collection of historical artifacts placed about the Inn.
It was great. Perfect location for us, wonderful innkeepers, great ambiance, comfortable and so reasonably priced. If there are more kind and welcoming B and B's in W. Maine...I haven't been to them. Thanks for our terrific stay!!

The proprietors of the Chapman Inn, Sandy & Fred, make you feel right at home. Fred makes a delicious breakfast and entertains you with his great charm & wit. Their beautiful dog, Mike will say hi, if he wants to, otherwise he stays close to his home area looking over his family. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. The Inn is very quaint in decor, but has all the comforts of home with WIFI and nice flat screen TVs in each room. I would definitely recommend this Inn to families and couples.
My wife and I stayed at the inn a few weekends ago and had a very nice stay. Sandra and Fred were not only accomodating to the guests, but were very friendly and involved with every aspect of our stay. The location in the center of town next to the common was perfect as we attended the festival going on that weekend. We would certainly recommend the inn to anyone visiting the Bethel area, just don't miss out on the waffles for breakfast! Well, the omelette was pretty darn good too if you prefer the egg option.
On our long three month car trip, it was here that we had the best night's sleep, the best, hearty homemade breakfast, and met some of the nicest folks who own the B&B as well as their family and guests! A wonderful, historical old Inn!
We stayed at the Chapman Inn during February vacation with our kids, ages 17 and 20. We had the 2 third floor rooms, which included a small sitting area with a bathroom between them. This arrangement worked out well for us. The sitting area included a foldup bed, which my daughter chose to use rather than sleep in the queen bed with her brother.
The rooms and Inn were neat and clean. The Inn dates from the Civil War, so no surprise that the floors were uneven and creaky. The biggest downside was the bathroom. As someone else mentioned, the sloped ceilings made it way too short for my 6'2" husband and 6' son. My husband would have given only 3 stars for this reason.
The breakfast was great. Plenty of food, fresh baked breads, muffins and cinnamon rolls to die for. Hot foods included eggs, potatoes, sausage and bacon. Fresh fruit too.
We did see the dog snap at a couple people, so keep your distance. The cat was very pleasant.
