My wife and I visited Bethel last fall and discovered this beautiful park. We had originally intended to stay and explore mostly in New Hampshire, but were very glad we chose Maine instead.
Grafton Notch is not well known and I really hope it stays that way. When compared to the "Kank" in New Hampshire the traffic count is puny, and that is what makes it such a nice place to visit. We visited the entire length of the park an went on into New Hampshire, crossed into Vermont and followed the Connecticut River all in one easy day.
The state of Maine requests $5.00 from you for the right to enjoy the entire park, which to me is only fair.
If you decide to visit, plan on staying in Bethel, the small town ambiance will get to you and provide a real relaxing visit. We got so used to it in our four days there, that the trip back to the airport in Manchester NH felt like we were going back to Miami, with all the traffic.

We couldn't do much hiking, as everything was covered in ice and we didn't have proper equipment, but the Bethel Chamber of Commerce directed us to a few flat sites that were easily accessible and just gorgeous: Screw Auger Falls Gorge, Mother Walker Falls Gorge, and Moose Cave Gorge.

Scenic drive. Stopped and visited Screw Auger Falls. Good photo opportunities. Good pegmatite geology exposed in stream bedrock.

My wife and I are not avid hikers, nor do we have proper hiking gear, but we are both athletic and always looking for physical activities that challanges our mind and body. Eyebrow loop trail was a perfect day 1/2 day hike for us. The first portion is not steep nor challenging. Once you get to this massive slab of granet things get interesting. To cross this mammoth you need to use the steel ladders and rungs which are built into the rock. Once on the other side, the steep climb begins. You need to use the roots on the trees as your guide up the side of the mountain. If you are looking for a cardio work out you found it on eyebrow loop trail. Once at the top you are rewarded with spectacular views. The hike to the top took us a little over an hour. I would not recommend for children or casual hikers who are looking for a walk in the woods.
