“Great food! Great people!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

Read many reviews and thought we should try it out. You have to order and then they call your name for you to pick up your food. The girl at the counter was very patient with us, since the menu was large. We ordered Lobster and salad, then paid for our meal. When we got our food the manager told us we where over charged and gave me money back. Wow, that took me by surprise. I would not have known that due to the weighing of the lobster. Loved the honesty! The lobster was so fresh and delicious! Loved eating outside over looking the water. Great experience! Will go back when we visit Bar Harbor again.

“Quintessential Lobster Pound”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

This place has it all - beautiful harbor setting, a little off the beaten track, casual ambiance. A place you can really dig into your lobster and enjoy every last bit. This is the kind of place to go for lobster in the rough - no fancy stuff. The lobster is delicious Maine lobster and is relatively reasonably priced. The steamers were sweet and tender and served with broth and melted butter. HIghly recommended!

“Thurston's has the View”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

We did a fair amount of research on how/where to go for the complete lobster dining experience. Our conclusion was if we would only eat lobster once on our New England trip, it would have to be at Thurston's. Indeed, we went directly to Thurston's upon our arrival in Bar Harbor.

We are from Louisiana, live on the bayou and we are very experienced seafood eaters. Still, we don't ever eat lobster and our research was not providing the full details on exactly what a Lobster Pound is. We went to three different ones and I am still not exactly sure what this terminology means. It seems to equal very informal dining establishment where live lobsters stare you in the face until you select one for the staff to drop into the steaming pots. There are a handfull of accompaniments and side dishes that are also available at a lobster pound.

So at Thurston's we ordered crab cakes, a medium lobster and lobster roll. The locals will tell you that a lobster roll is lobster meat on a hot dog bun. That's mostly true. Thurston's used a thick, slender piece of bread and browned it on a gridle and then put sort-of-like lobster salad on it. It's pretty much pure lobster meat, but there is mayo or some other kind of sauce and stuff with the lobster. Lobster roll is good. We had it three different places. All were different, but good.

Our steamed lobster was eaten with melted butter. It was really good, but so was the lobster from the other lobster pounds. Steamed lobster and butter is good stuff. They are starting with a live lobster, so you know the seafood is fresh.

The crab cakes were good, too. We split a large bottle of brown ale from the Bar Harbor Brewing company and the meal came to 43-dollars. Thurston's was the best value out of the three lobster shacks we dined at. Still, chowing down of bunches of lobster is not an inexpensive proposition.

If you are going to go to only one lobster pound, I do agree that Thurston's is the one to try. I say this mainly due to the relative value here and due to the terrific location directly on Bass Harbor which is so picturesque and just like you'd expect a seaside Maine town to look. Remember this is not a fancy restaruant. It is a seafood shack directly on a beautiful harbor in Maine.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

We stopped by for lunch. The place is right on the harbor with a nice view and casual seating. We did not have lobster. The lobster stew was just some warmed milk with a few pieces of lobster at the bottom of the $9 bowl! The crab could not be found in the crab cakes....mostly cornmeal. Feel like we wasted our money here.

“Loved it!”

The best place around for Lobster... Had it twice at Thurston's while vacationing in Maine. Our house was in Bernard so we could walk to Thurston's. I hope it never changes. We will be back next year!
