“Felt like Home”

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Driftwood Cottage. We both loved the place and have zero complaints, but I have a potential warning...

CAT ALLERGY WARNING: The owners' cats seemed to hang out outside the Driftwood Cottage (it is fairly close to the owners' house) and one cat would watch us from our front porch every day while we were cooking. The cats were extremely well-behaved and never tried to sneak in when the door was open. But my boyfriend is allergic to many things, including cats, and his allergies would act up a little when he got into bed. We cannot say for certain that his allergies flared up due to the cats, but it would not surprise me if other patrons let the cats into the cottage previously (it is difficult to get pet dander out of bedding). If you are severely allergic to cats, or just hate cats, I would suggest choosing one of their cottages that is not the Driftwood Cottage just to be safe, as it is fairly close to the owners' house and the cats seem to hang out around there.

Other than that, I only have good things to say about the place. The cottage itself was pretty spacious and quite comfortable. I was sort of blown away with how new and well-kept everything seemed - just to name a few, nice sheets and blankets, very big/soft bath towels, a granite cutting board, sharp knives, plenty of high quality pots, pans and dishes, cute decor, quality furniture, I could go on and on. Things were so nice I would probably enjoy living there long term honestly.

As for location, I much preferred this part of the island. It was very quiet and laid back, but there was still plenty of things to do and see. Thurston's Lobster Pound is pretty close by, as is a grocery store and post office.

I honestly don't know how you could make a cottage any better; we'll probably stay here again if we go back to Mount Desert Island. (And we hope to come back!) I highly recommend this place.

I can only repeat what the others have said. Lots of nice details in the decorating. Well-appointed. Very comfortable. Canoes and kayaks, and even a couple bikes, available for use.The pictures posted here and on the owners site are accurate. Comfort and cost were the trade off for a lack of waterview and being 30 minutes from Bar Harbor. It was worth it. The cottages are of a reasonable distance from one another. Don't assume because the unit you are staying in doesn't allow pets that the cottage next door won't have a barking dog. Having to do laundry and make beds with fresh linen before leaving was a bit odd also. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!

This was the first time my son and I stayed at Boathouse Way cottages but it certainly won't be the last! I booked Whalesback cottage only 2 days before we planned to arrive, but this was not a problem at all with the owners. The cottage was exceptionally clean & comfortable (complete with pillowtop mattresses that make it hard to get up in the morning!) with everything you could possibly need in the kitchen (as the other review already states). I met one of the owners, Keith, who was very friendly. Also, it is very quiet there at night as the cottages are on a side street off the main road. The price is very reasonable, especially when compared to the other lodging possibilities on the island.

This is our 8th season at Boathouse Way Cottages. We've stayed twice in the Homeport and all other times in the Whalesback cottage. Both are beautifully outfitted with every thing you could need - and more. Missy and Keith anticipated everything - from beach towels, to beach coolers. Spaghetti pots to Lobster pots. It's all here. It's clear the Higgins put a lot of heart and hard work in to building and decorating the cabins. And every time we come, we marvel at how well maintained and clean everything is - including the outdoor grill. As far as location - we love it! The quiet side of the island allows us to enjoy the peace and serenity of MDI minus the crowds. The cabins are just a few miles from Southwest Harbor, which we pass through every day on our way to our favorite hiking and biking trails. Southwest Harbor has a bike shop, kayak shop, bakery, ice cream shop, drug store, gourmet food and wine store, several very good restaurants and a few cute - non-touristy - shops. And the National Park runs free Eco-bus service between Mitchell Rd (short walk from the cottages) and Southwest Harbor (to downtown Bar Harbor
and the Park as well). Our kids love it here. We love it here too. Highly recommend Boathouse Way Cottages.

We found Boathouse Way Cottages on-line while looking into places to stay on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The main goal was to have a nice, quiet, comfortable, clean place to come "home" to after a day of sightseeing in the “Acadia National Park”. We hit the jack pot when we decided to stay here! The cottage was wonderful with all the amenities you could ever dream of needing, truly a home away from home. The cottages were built in 2004 and are nicely spaced on a sprawling wooded property. The cottages have wood decked front porches with wicker furniture, gas grilles, fire pits, and picnic benches. The interiors have hardwood floor, natural wood paneled walls, cathedral ceilings, and gas fire places. The cottage we stayed in was the “Boathouse”. It was nicely sized with two queen size bedrooms, two closets, full bathroom with a stacked washer and dryer, full kitchen, and a combined living and dining room area. Other amenities included a Cable TV with DVD and video player, stereo with CD player, luxury bath towels, beach towels, Ralph Lauren bedding, microwave, oven/ stove, toaster, blender, dishes, full refrigerator, cooler, ice packs, and phones in each room. The cottage was eclectically decorated with authentic Maine and boating decor. The cottage was very clean, quiet, and comfortable. It was the best place we have ever stayed besides home. Highly recommended.

  • Liked — Everything was wonderful. Home away from Home. Wish we could have stayed all summer.
