My boyfriend and I stayed in the Driftwood Cottage. We both loved the place and have zero complaints, but I have a potential warning...
CAT ALLERGY WARNING: The owners' cats seemed to hang out outside the Driftwood Cottage (it is fairly close to the owners' house) and one cat would watch us from our front porch every day while we were cooking. The cats were extremely well-behaved and never tried to sneak in when the door was open. But my boyfriend is allergic to many things, including cats, and his allergies would act up a little when he got into bed. We cannot say for certain that his allergies flared up due to the cats, but it would not surprise me if other patrons let the cats into the cottage previously (it is difficult to get pet dander out of bedding). If you are severely allergic to cats, or just hate cats, I would suggest choosing one of their cottages that is not the Driftwood Cottage just to be safe, as it is fairly close to the owners' house and the cats seem to hang out around there.
Other than that, I only have good things to say about the place. The cottage itself was pretty spacious and quite comfortable. I was sort of blown away with how new and well-kept everything seemed - just to name a few, nice sheets and blankets, very big/soft bath towels, a granite cutting board, sharp knives, plenty of high quality pots, pans and dishes, cute decor, quality furniture, I could go on and on. Things were so nice I would probably enjoy living there long term honestly.
As for location, I much preferred this part of the island. It was very quiet and laid back, but there was still plenty of things to do and see. Thurston's Lobster Pound is pretty close by, as is a grocery store and post office.
I honestly don't know how you could make a cottage any better; we'll probably stay here again if we go back to Mount Desert Island. (And we hope to come back!) I highly recommend this place.
