“Nice relaxing place in lovely location.”
Reviewed September 29, 2011

We stayed in cabin 33, recently renovated and found it to be extremely clean, very well appointed, with quality furnishings. The facilities were more than adequate for a very comfortable stay and the siting of no.33 could not have been much better, as we had superb views of Penobscot Bay, both from the porch and inside at least two rooms. They seem to have a policy of on-going renovations, so, if you book in advance, it pays to ask for a recently done cabin. As I have said, we can't vouch for the motel or all of the cabins, but we could not fault our particular one.
With regard to criticism of the sweet old lady who runs the complex, yes, her system may seem quaint to anyone used to more modern fast-track check-ins, but we found that to add to the relaxing atmosphere of the place. She, herself was very helpful and patient, especially when, we couldn't find no.33, when it was right under our noses.
In all we spent three very happy nights there and would go again like a shot if in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated cabin!

We stayed in an Ocean Front Cottage. The view from the bedroom, when we woke up at sunrise, was breathtaking. In the early morning, we spend almost 2hrs alone on the rocky beach with our 1 year old - it was lovely.

The check in/check out was a lesson in patience as they are not on a computer system. The cottage was very clean but had a slight damp air quality though it is virtually on the water so to be expected. It also had a "step back in time" quality and the beds were in rough shape. However for the price, and the amazing view I would not complain. An idyllic budget option.

There was also a playground and a fire-pit to roast smores etc on the beach in the evening.

Let's start with the positives: the cabins are great, updated and very clean; location is pretty nice as it is on the water with great views; hairdryers in room along with mini kitchen set up; staff/owner is very sweet; and this is probably the best bargain in town given the cleanliness. We had a cabin which was very good, but friends had a motel room that had not been upgraded (no hairdryer, very dated room and bath amenities). This place could stand to move into the 21st century (or at least the 20th) as all check in and out is still handled manually and paperwork seems to go missing which creates a long check in process and an extra long check out process -- in the big scheme of things not a big deal unless you are in a hurry. And when friends wanted to move up to a cabin, they were told there were none available; however it was clear later that there were several available. It would appear that there was no way for owner/staff to really know what was available, so they missed out on some extra revenue that night. Also, the sheets on all beds were pilled - need to invest in better bedding.

We stayed in cabin 16 and another centrally located cabin and had a restful and wonderful time. The views of the bay were beautiful, it is kid and dog friendly, and the location is easy to access. The gardens at the entrance to Colonial Gables are also worth the effort to stroll. We are looking forward to going back Discovery Day weekend. If you are looking for a modern, 5 star resort, this is not the place. But, if you are looking for a place to stay that is quintessentially coastal Maine, Colonial Gables is the place to stay.

We chose this property as our last hurrah in Maine. And we are so pleased that we did.. you check in and drive down the hill to your cottage.. BREATHTAKING.. the ocean is at your finger tips... the view is spectacular the smell of the salty sea air is all around... we were in cottage 10.. cute wonderful with charm all around... we took our lawn chairs to the oceans edge and enjoyed a drink while the tide came in... After a quick walk to "Mr J's and the lobster to enjoy a wonderful lobster supper... we walked back to the village and enjoyed a campfire (in the camp fire area) had a few more drinks and continued to relax as the waves lapped up on the shore... relaxing, carefree and an absolutely wonderful experience.. we will defiantly make this a reoccurring stop on any further travels that bring us to Maine

Room Tip: Cottage 10.. apparently it has been newly renovated. the cottage was charming, clean and well put to...

My husband's family stayed here many summers ago each year for family vacation. While we were in the area decided to stop by and check out the place first hand. Various cottages spread out across the hillside overlooking the bay. Some have been renovated, some have not. Cabin #49 for example, is in it's original condition, I'd say definitely 50's era. That is the cottage my inlaws used to vacation in, and it is exactly the same as they remember it. I can completely understand why they have not renovated some of their units, as families come back year after year and enjoy the nostalgia of the place. We did check out a few other units #14 was a small one room cottage with a great view of the bay and play area. Looking at it from the outside you would not believe it was a fully renovated cottage inside. A nice kitchen area, king size bed, and sparkling new bathroom with walk in shower. Also looked at cottage #17 which was a 1 bedroom unit with separate sleeping area (queen bed) full bath with tub/shower, full living area with sofa & flat screen tv, and also an eat in kitchen area fully equipped in addition to a cute screen porch. We are planning a stay for next year with extended family. With many different option to choose from, just be sure to express what you are looking for to office staff and they'll be happy to direct you toward the proper cottage to meet your needs, whether it be new and renovated, or a step back in time.

Needed a place to stay, passed Colonial Gables, and turned around to check it out. All the cabins were taken, so stayed in the motel. Each room has a deck that looks out on Penobscot Bay, just beautiful! The room was clean, though a bit dated, the bathroom is from the 50's.
