“New Years Eve at The Gothic”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

We also had the pre-fixed 5 course meal at The Gothic on New Years Eve. All 5 courses were exceptional. The squash gnudi was excellent as was the scallop and uni. All courses were plated to make the food look beautiful. The chocolate dessert with the almond ice cream was also exceptional. The service was excellent and we enjoyed the champagne which was included.

We were very glad we went to The Gothic for New Years and we will definitely be going many more times. This restaurant is a breath of fresh air in a small town. The historic building is the perfect setting for a great meal.

“New Years at The Gothic”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

We had great expectations. It was New Year's Eve and the menu was set. It went well until the entree arrived. The vegetarian option was a flop. Those in our party who had the beef said that it was very good. It seemed very over-priced and we will probably not go back.

“Tastes fit for Royalty”
Reviewed January 15, 2014

My friend and I had an excellent experience at The Gothic last night. It WAS off-season, so the we could relax and enjoy each course in an unhurried manner. I have to say, the subtle seasoning of the dishes were superb. Reading the menu was a gastronomic adventure in itself. What would these unusual mixtures of flavors produce? Everything that we ate was enjoyable and beautifully presented with an eye to color. The best IMHO was the delicata squash with bean curd and tahini. Whoever would have thought? No request seemed to create a problem, from my "virgin" cocktail to splitting every course. We spent almost 4 hours savoring all the dishes we ordered. The chef's knowledge and creativity is well-worth the money we spent, and I urge you to give it a try if you come to Belfast.

“Overshot and missed the target”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

This restaurant has promise but isn't there yet.

It opened in June of 2013, according to a glowing review of it written by its owner on June 8 (which I thought was against TripAdvisor rules) so its high ceilings and airy interior must have been quite pleasant then. For chilly fall and winter nights they will have to do something to warm up the atmosphere. In mid-October I had to wear my coat in the dining room.

First, the wines by the glass. Mediocre. Dull, dull, dull. At $10-11 per glass, you could order a bottle of something better.

The menu is commendably brief and divided by categories: meats, seafood, vegetarian. We were four diners; two ordered cod with some braised vegetables and two ordered short ribs. I'm sorry to say the short ribs were gristly and overly fatty and the edible parts a bit stringy. Luckliy, they have doggy bags -- for real doggies. Contrary to all their hubris about fresh local products and sous-vide preparation, the cod smelled a tad suspicious for boat-to-table boasts. One of our party was a commercial fisherman and knows. I'll make it short: we were all a bit disappointed though we were having a good time together.

Some of the prices were perplexing. An appetizer order of raw kale salad, "massaged" kale, mind you, was $11 for a mountain of raw kale that our companion wanted to send back to the kitchen for more massaging as the kale was a bit mature for this purpose, and we all looked like we were chewing our cud as we gave it a try. Grainy sorbet in semifreddo dessert.

I don't mean to be completely negative about The Gothic as I think their hearts are in the right place; they just haven't perfected the performance. Try it in a year.

“Inspired menu, gracious service”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

From the smart, craft cocktails, to the olive oil cake, we enjoyed a sumptuous feast -- locally sourced and artfully prepared. Try the oysters served with Champagne ice, and the rich, creamy smoked rutabaga soup. Short rib was superb! Efficient, knowledgeable and friendly servers clearly take pride in the menu and ingredients. Lovely old bank building; warm glow of understated decor.
Best dining in Belfast!
