“Lovely Lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

We went to Chase Daily while driving through the mid coast of Maine. Belfast is a lovely downtown and Chase Daily is in the center of town. There was a very long wait (30-40 min) for a 1:00 lunch. We used the time to poke in the shops.

The service was friendly and engaged with us by offering advice (about food choices and afternoon plans) when asked. The menu was full of wonderful vegetarian choices. We ordered the black beans and rice. There was an up-charge for salsa and cheese of a dollar, fifty. I expected fresh salsa, but it was from a jar. The meal was very reasonably priced, but I was left wondering about the extra cost for a couple of table spoons of bleh salsa and a little cheese. The dish was full of fresh cilantro making the overall taste delightful.

I would certainly go back.

“Bakery is good, the restaurant is painfully slow ....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

The bakery is very good, love their breads, muffins, tarts, and especially enjoy the donuts but sadly, they rarely make them. Summertime veggies in the market are always great. The service is super slow, so you better not be starving or in a hurry. Also, love the egg sandwich with cheddar and greens! Great place to buy a big bunch of fresh basil in the summertime. A MUST for all vegetarians passing through town!

“Great dinner...didn't miss the meat at all”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

We have been to Chase’s many times before but this was the 1st time we made it for dinner. We didn’t realize that we could have made reservations but we were lucky as they had a few table free and were seated very quickly. We had a tortilla soup; it was just spicy and hot enough to take the bite off the cold winter night. I was debating if I should have the pie or cannelloni with a spinach and cheese filling, the waiter recommended cannelloni and I was not disappointed. My husband had the grilled polenta which was good but not as good as the cannelloni. We finished the dinner with collapsed chocolate cake with coffee ice cream that was so delicious. We had a great leisurely dinner with great food and great conversation with the Chase’s family and will be sure to return.

“honest-to-goodness food; gourmet without the frou-frou”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2013

my husband suggested a trip up to belfast to poke around some of our favorite shops and to eat at chase's daily, to which he'd been introduced by a friend. saturday afternoon brunch is a busy time, and we put our names on a list, took 25 minutes browsing around the bookstore across the street, and returned to eat a most excellent meal.

the table is set in a way that reminds me of my grandparent's cabin on the lake: with mis-matched plates and well-loved cloth napkins on a vintage table. even the toast (homemade bread? seemed to be, but i forgot to ask) reminded me of summers on the lake, toasting bread over a campfire. the menu is compact but by no means limited - the offerings are well-rounded and our food was very tasty. i had the black bean soup (offered with cream, which i declined, but afterwards wished i had asked for goat cheese) and the sauteed greens with garlic. both were excellent: simple, hearty fare, flavorful, lacking nothing except competing or overpowering tastes. my husband had the olive and feta omlette (done to his liking: neither too 'squishy' nor rubbery) and the roasted parsnip salad with arugula and barley. again, seemingly simple dishes with excellent flavor. looking around at our fellow diners, i did not see one plate that wasn't wiped (maybe licked?) clean. the coffee is decent (no 'diner' coffee here), but we were too stuffed to attempt dessert - although the couple next to us tucked into delicious-looking boston cream pie cupcakes.

what to know before you go:
--> to say this place is popular would be an understatement. we thought we were playing it safe arriving at the later end of lunch, and still had a 25-minute wait. other reviewers have complained about the crowded entrance and being overlooked by the hostess - with which i can sympathize. there's really no place to wait when you're waiting to be seated (so my husband and i took a walk) and with so many parties arriving at once, i can see how only the pushy would get their names on the list soonest (sad to say, i know). however, if you go with a relaxed attitude and don't need to rush, you'll get your name on the list and a pretty accurate wait time, then you can explore a little more of this funky town.
--> prices may seem a little on the high side, but you'll get a good portion of _local_ fare for your dollar. the pizzas are big enough to share with another person (but i didn't see anyone willing to do that!), and both my husband and i were left comfortably full after our meal.
--> the place is kid-friendly but crowded and the staff move quickly, somthing to remember if you have little ones who like to wander.

my only criticisms of chase's would be the under-staffing and the wasted space. things may seem slow, but i believe it's because the kitchen is on the small side. i also believe that, if a large party is dining (as there was when we were there) the waitstaff can get overwhelmed. there is a large space at the back of the restaurant that displayed various and sundry art. it seems to me that, given the popularity of the place and the awkard waiting area, they would want to expand their seating to the back. on an unrelated yet positive note: the bathrooms were extremely clean.

chase's provided an exellent meal at a reasonable cost (given the portion size). we were spending a leisurely day in town, and so did not mind the wait for a table - especially as there were so many nifty shops to explore in the meantime. i would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a simple, hearty meal in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.
