We enjoyed a really nice meal here before a recent event at the EXCELLENT Chocolate Church Arts Center ( http://chocolatechurch.com ) . The owners and staff know how to present a nice dining experience that leaves you satisfied yet not over-stuffed. We had salad apps, an entrée and split a desert, did not have to loosen our belts AND we loved it.

Our main dishes were the Grilled Faroe Island Salmon with vanilla balsamic glaze, sweet potato mash & baby bok choy and the Vegan Napoleon with grilled vegetables, pistachio pesto, tomato
coulis & pomegranate balsamic glaze. Both were excellent, fresh and cooked just right.

The place is casual but clean. They have some art and nice Angela Adams rugs on the walls. The wait staff and the owners are very nice folks and really seem to appreciate their patrons. Even though we are not regulars there, we felt welcome and we will surely go back.

They serve some really tasty cocktails and have a nice wine list, many of which are available by the glass. Plus the cognacs, ports and so forth on the desert menu are a nice touch. We enjoyed some nice tawny port with our Chocolate Marmalade Tart desert...yum yum.

I hate to give 5 stars to any place as it implies no room for improvement, but Will, Pia and staff - you get 5 anyway :-)

I'm a retired local and dining out is an infrequent treat, therefore value is an important part of the equation when chosing a place for a special meal. I must admit that I'd resisted going to Solo for a long time because, in peeking in the front window, I thought the chairs and decor looked a little cold and uncomfortable. Boy was I wrong.

The interior, red brick walls and wood floors, is warmed by the colorful scandinavian furniture that turned out to be surprisingly comfy. Of the 3 rooms, the side dining room is my preference, although the basement/ cocktail lounge (which features live jazz on weekends) is equally quiet and perhaps a bit more secluded if privacy is your desire.

The service was friendly without being informal, the cocktails prepared and presented with care, the menu offered a nice variety without being intimidating or overwhelming. The chef changes the menu frequently and uses locally sourced groceries as much as possible.

The prices are on the high side, but not prohibitive, considering the quality and character of the presentations. There is a daily prix fixe three course dinner that is a good value, but on Wednesdays the chef offers a special $17.99 prix fixe meal that is an extraordinary value.

This is big city dining and service at small town prices. Highly recommended!

Went for dinner (had been there for lunch). The food was top notch and high value compared to Portland. Service was great, friendly, and causal. We ordered the seared duck breast with duck confit cassoulet with winter vegetables and the seafood fra davola. An amazing stand out was the wine list. It was a standout because it was a relatively eclectic wine list, but reasonably priced. bottles appeared to be 200% mark up as opposed to the traditional 300% so the restaurant encourages you you to enjoy wine should you chose too. Thank you!
