While the food we had was good, should have had the specialty of the house - steak! The appetizers we had, crab cakes, were excellent and the salads, too.

This is my third review of the Admiral's Steakhouse (2010 and 2012). Previous reviews were positive but things have gone downhill since last year. They used to be the best restaurant in Bath but they have forfeited that designation to Solo Bistro...We visit the Admiral's a couple of times each summer as a change of pace from fried seafood and I have always enjoyed the rack of lamb and their good wine list. The rack is still good but our first two wine choices were not available, a substitute was suggested (Malbec - bad!) and sent back. The third try, Rodney Strong cab, was good. Service was VERY slow. We have had this problem before when there is a party in the private dining room. They seem to consistently understaff...The onion soup was not up to steakhouse standards - not much flavor - and the Oysters Rockefeller were tasteless at $17. Angela had the sesame crusted tuna and reported it as "not the best".Nice decor, clean, nice clientele...The blueberry pie (buckle) ala mode was good but they ruined a traditional Maine desert my adding lemon to the pie....We won't be back this summer! Maybe next year!..This place needs more management attention and maybe a new chef!

Bath is known for its iron works and ships. Although the "Admiral" doesn't impress from the street, inside there is a welcoming bar and lounge and a cozy dining room with dark panelling and nautical decor matching the city's rich history and traditions.
On a recent Saturday evening we were seated promptly around 8PM by a friendly waitress with a Southern drawl and great enthusiasm for the menu. After a couple of long days beating against the winds, the hospitality was welcome. I started with a Mango Martini ( reasonably priced) and chilled to perfection on this sixth day of an oppressive heat wave. My husband's beer was equally chilled but we were surprised that there were no draft choices.
Moving along to the salad, we split and Iceberg Wedge (continuing with the cool concept) and were delighted with the ample portion, and the flavor. Our entrees included a NY sirloin and lime-marinated steak which were perfectly done, tender and juicy. The special potato, twice baked and cheesy was just the right size and the warm bread irresistible. The Admiral's is heavy on the carbs: all but one of the veggie options were: corn, potato, or grits, so this is NOT your "organic locally grown " spot. A wide variety of deserts was recited with melodious glee by the waitress and we opted for the hot chocolate pudding cake which put the total cholesterol count off the charts. Nevertheless, we were refreshed and sated, and had enough energy to visit LLBean's, about a twenty minute drive away, for some late night shopping.
This is a good restaurant but could be improved with a slightly better layout. From inside the dining area we could see right into the service areas which detracted from the lovely dining room. Perhaps there could be some minor modifications that would block this. Also, the ladies room has no stalls but two units. Seems a little odd and perhaps a code issue. Or is this a Navy thing?

We have been Solo Bistro fans for several years, but recently when we had family visiting, we decided that the menu at Admiral Steakhouse would be more to everyone's liking. Though the night we were there a high school reunion group was also, but the service for our table of 6 was friendly and attentive (without being cloying or overly chummy). Two had prime rib and found the smaller cut to be more than adequate; one had tuna steak, one had a 12 oz. filet mignon, and two had the lazy lobster -- I was one of the last. The sherry cream sauce with the lobster is excellent. Several of us had the tomato, mozarella, and basil (Caprese) salad, and one had oyster shooters. All in all, a most enjoyable meal.

Since Solo Bistro no longer is open on Sunday, we made reservations for a Sunday evening after a show at Maine State Music Theater. So often our initial impression just doesn't hold up on subseqent visits, but that was not the case with Admiral. We're glad we finally tried it, after several summers of saying to ourselves, "A steakhouse? In Maine?" The menu is varied enough that we feel it warrants further explorations!

OK - Maine is not known for steak but this place holds its own in the 'food category' -- its a good, solid, well prepared steak dinner. After months of seafood, its like butter on the tongue. Now, the outside is very, very seedy and the location in Bath, not very scenic -- but then I hope you are not going there for that! On the steak and meats front - this is the best in the region for that straightforward steak and potato fix and both locals and out of towner's share this locale.
Service is good but do make reservations if you can as it fills up.
