Owner description: Awarded Yankee Magazine's "Best Island Tour," we are the Bar Harbor area's favorite boat cruise and a family owned business now in our 22nd year. Operating out of Bass Harbor to the islands of Blue Hill Bay, we offer exclusive access to what many consider one of the most beautiful parts of the Maine coast, as well as its prettiest harbor. Being off the beaten path, our formula for success is offering the highest quality experience at some of the lowest rates on Mount Desert Island. Try out our 11:00-2:30 Lunch Cruise to Frenchboro; established in 1820 and one of the last year round island fishing communities in Maine, Frenchboro is a place that many people find hard to believe still exists in our busy, high-tech world. Or, join us for the 3:00-5:00 Nature Cruise, where you'll see seals, bald eagles, and even haul a lobster trap or two. We cherish your business and our many return customers, and you'll find that it shows from start to finish.

“Our favorite cruise”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

Cruise aboard the RL Gott, a lobster style boat with Captain Eli. This is one of our most favorite things to take visitors on. Eli, and his father, Kim, before him are natives of the area and know a lot about its history. You get close to the outlying islands, see seals and bird life and he will raise a lobster trap and show you the catch. The cruise takes in a salmon farming operation, lots of nature and wildlife and history of the area and its people. Caution, it can get cold out on the water even on a warm summer day. Take along a jacket. This is a real bargain for the price of admission.

“Outstanding!”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

This was a great cruise. We learned a lot about the area, the wildlife and lobster fishing. The tour guides were knowledgeable and very personable. The amount of information and the amount of sites and wildlife we experienced were fantastic. The price was reasonable and we would highly recommend this for adults and children. Excellent value.

“Front Row Seat, Last Lunch Cruise of the Season”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

ISLAND CRUISES

Instead of going to Acadia National Park, we adjusted our schedule to join the last lunch cruise of the 2013 season. Are we ever glad we did! (The online reservation system was a breeze, even late at night.) We're also glad we boarded early and got front row seats on the driver's side of the boat (nautically known as "starboard"), although there's not a bad seat on board. The weather was stunning, the tour highly informative, and the entire experience a highlight of our week on coastal Maine.

As West Coasters from the other Portland, we knew little about Maine, its families, fisheries and communities when we boarded the R. L. Gott. Just three and a half hours later, we understood better what drew early immigrants to such rugged, challenging and spectacular land and sea scapes, and why their descendants stay, if they can.

We learned about the Gotts and islands that still bear their name. We also saw that barging and trucking building supplies is seldom easy on a Maine island. We lunched in and toured picturesque Frenchboro. Back and forth, we saw eagles, seals, porpoises, lighthouses, granite. And lobsters, pulled live from the captain's pot, starboard.

We now know how to tell the the differences between those lobsters that can be kept and those that will return to saltwater to find another pot's kitchen and parlor to explore. And we know why, when in Maine, it's important to eat lobster, rolled or otherwise. While we'll never be Maine fishermen--for one thing, we don't have the strength, stamina or 52 years to wait for the privilege--we have a better appreciation for what it takes to get live Maine lobsters from their homes to ours.

Thanks, Eli and Heather, for giving us front row seats at such a memorable Maine event.

“if you want to see bald eagles, seals, birds, this is the cruise”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

What a terrific afternoon! Enjoyed learning about the various islands, seeing bald eagles, a variety of other shore birds, seals, as well as been introduced to the life of the lobsterman. Make sure that you do not miss this very pleasant boat excursion.

“Great day trip on mount desert island”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

Our family highly enjoyed and recommends the morning cruise to frenchboro with island cruises. Eli the owner is highly knowledgable and passionate about Bass Harbor and the environs and we learned a lot about the history and culture. We saw a ton of wildlife including bald eagles harbor seals and porpoises and frenchboro is a very interesting community. Eli also retrieved my daughters camera from 6 feet of murky water!
