Get there at least 30 minutes before sunset and leave in time, it is a bit of a drive to get here from the rest of Arcadia.
There is a footpath at the south end of the parking lot. Follow it and get down on the rocks past the staircase.
You will have to do some scambling over rocks to get to the best spot. Get down close to the surf and walk up until you are just a hundred feet south of the Light.
See my attached photo.
If you are lucky and it is foggy, the red light makes some really cool raybeams!

Great for us!!! We were lucky...easy parking, no crowds, few people and they were willing to move to allow us to snap an unobstructed photo of lighthouse. Lots of rocks for sitting and enjoying the ocean view...some easy to get to and some worth the climb. It could be disappointing for someone with limited physical abilities.

Arrive early - about 30-60 minutes before sunset. The small parking lot may be full and you might have to park on the narrow road. There is a toilet at the east end of the parking lot. Follow the trail at the east end of the parking lot, then down the wooden stairs and the stone stairs. You then have to carefully climb on rough, separated, rocks, some with water between them. Keep your camera in your camera bag so if you fall the camera will be protected. Bring a tripod. You will need to climb the rocks to almost the edge of the water, to get a good shot of the lighthouse with rocks in the foreground. There could be many people jockeying for a few prime set-up spots, so arrive early.

If you want to enjoy sunset there you HAVE TO BE ABLE TO CLIMB not that steep rocky cliffs. The place was swarming with tourists, something I hate, more than hundred people stood at the front of the shore, just below the lighthouse taking thousands of photos of sunset for about 1.5 hrs!!! Terrible! They looked like some colony of penguins from afar. I was ready to leave this gorgeous place after 2 minutes but then decided to go the other way - away from the lighthouse and that was perfect. After scrambling over easy rocks for 15 minutes along the cliff toward east i was rewarded with magnificent experience of Maine wilderness along the coast. The sun was slowly setting and there I was alone with waves beating the shore. I stayed there for over an hour than just before the sunset returned to the "colony" and took gorgeous pictures of the sunset.

The Bass Harbor Head lighthouse is a scenic view on the western portion of MDI. There is a walk from the parking lot, and you can glimpse the top of the red beacon from the lot itself. The stairs down to the shore provide more of a classic viewpoint of a coastal lighthouse.
