Bahaar is a nice, family-owned restaurant in the central part of downtown Bangor specializing in authentic Pakistani dishes. Upon entering, diners are greeted by the wonderfully rich and exotic mingling of scents from spices in small bottles lining a low wall that deliniates the dining area from the entry. Though the decor and flatware are a bit on the chintzy side, the restaurant is clean and well lit. Ethnic background music compliments the dining experience without competing with conversation levels.
The food is freshly prepared, to order, and nicely consistent in quality. Service is friendly, gracious, and always customer-oriented. Wait staff use a 1-10 number scale to indicate the heat levels in some of the spicer dishes and the kitchen does a very good job meeting expectations. Diners may order fresh, traditional flat breads to be served while the main meal is being prepared. Servings are generous and moderately priced. Alcohol is not served.
The dining area is small. When empty, the room is difficult for someone with a disability to maneuver and virtually impossible when the restaurant is crowded. Anyone in need of seating accommodations should call ahead to reserve a table outside the window alcove area. The restroom is tiny and not handicapped accessible. Because the dining room is small, when crowded, the noise level can swell to levels that may be uncomfortable for some diners but more often than not, when the room is full of laughter and conversation, it feels like a successful dinner party in full swing.
