Owner description: Museum dedicated to preserving and displaying Maine's land transportation equipment.

For those of us who have never witnessed snow, especially in the way that Maine gets snow, the Cole Land Transportation Museum offers examples of how snow driving equipment changed to meet the needs of the locals. You get to see snow rollers, increasingly larger and more ingenious snow plows and snow recreation vehicles.

You also get to see many of the transportation vehicles used by the Cole family business. One little tidbit learned from two very helpful volunteers was that Mr. Cole was in World War II and gave up his seat to a man who felt lucky where he was sitting. Shortly after a round hit the front seat, killing the man and four others, while Mr. Cole was blown off, surviving. He decided he'd make the world a better place on his return and one of the reasons that he built this museum was to let kids learn about Maine history--kids get in free.

There is a good assortment of vehicles of all sorts. There's also war memorials on the property as well as a covered bridge. It takes about 2 hours to see because the place is really fascinating.

I had both my kids engaged all around the place. I would never admit that it am a "Motorhead" but anyting related to transportation and vehicles is allways interesting. It's also fun when I can take my kids and go thru a place and learn together and tell them more about what's in front of them. This place is great,

We were staying in a nearby town and were looking for a fun rainy day activity. We found it here! I was surprised with the size if it when we first arrived, and it is packed full with all kinds of different vehicles, ranging from plow trucks, fire trucks, deliver trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, even a full sized locomotive and a replica train station. They also have a section dedicated to veterans and the wars fought over the years. It was perfect for our young son, and we learned a lot as well. We plan on returning when we travel up to Maine again in the near future!

During our visit to Maine we visited this museum and were very surprised at how great it was. There is so much history here and you see everything from the first bicycle in Maine to a Stanley Steamer vehicle to old snow plows to trains to cars to almost anything to do with transportation. Tons of great pictures, too. We really enjoyed it.
