“Great Location near airport”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2014

although i was not a fan of the staff, as they were a bit bland, the hotel and restaurant here were perfect. We stayed here for our last night in Scotland as it was close to the airport and the room size was excellent, yet the bed was very hard. we were able to get a free taxi (hotel bus) to the airport which was extremely helpful as we had a ton of luggage. The restaurant was absolutely incredible and our waiter on point. I had my favorite, fish n chips and it was the best i have had in a very long time. one they they offered was traditional or breaded which i had not seen in any other restaurant in the UK. but of course i went the traditional way. my mouth is still watering. i highly reccomend this hotel and restaurant.

Room Tip: all the rooms seem to be in excellent location and all the floors clean and noise free.

Modern and sleek meets the needs of the traveller/tourist wishing close access to South Queensferry. We stayed overnight while attending a wedding at Dundas Castle and found the stay a beneficial addition to our visit. The hotel meets every need clean comfortable pleasing. Very quiet despite being just off the motorway. The staff are exceptional, friendly and attentive while remaining unobtrusive. While there the Hotel had some kind of repair work. Which they had advised us about in advance but we were not aware of any disruption and the complimentary breakfast was fabulous. Great for an overnight or business stay however if you want the 'character' of the area this hotel will be too modern for you.

Room Tip: We had standard which was great for one night Upgrade if staying longer

This was our first visit to the Dakota and was for 2 nights over New Year period. It was very busy indeed with a huge influx of visitors for the Edinburgh New Year party. We were there purely to relax though.

Every single member of staff we came across was polite, welcoming and efficient. They were also immulately presented, both male and female. It's nice to see female waiting staff all had their hair done up in a tidy bun : - they looked so professional and could easily have passed as air hostesses. All restaurant staff were unfailingly welcoming morning, noon and night. As any seasoned traveller will know, this is highly uncommon .....

The room was very comfortable and our request for a quiet area of the hotel was met. Clean with a good and generous supply of toiletries, replenished daily. Strangely, I found nowhere to hang longer garments as the rails in the wardrobe are only around waist level - Ok for shirts and jackets but hanging a dress and a long skirt was a challenge!

Food in the restaurant was very nice ( we ate their both nights ). We enjoyed very good service, though, on the second night, we were surprised to be placed so close to another couple when there was plenty of empty tables that would have afforded us all a bit more privacy.

I must also mention the cocktails we enjoyed which were absolutely stunning (especially the Orange Brulee and the traditional Mojito). They really know how to shake up a great cocktail, using the best ingredients and in perfectly balanced proportions.

Now for breakfast (and this is where the Dakota has dropped a point) . The cooked breakfast was just adequate, although heavily geared towards fish options ( no less than 3 dishes with salmon, haddock or kippers). Husband, who doesn't like fish much, had the Full Scottish but gave up on the bacon which was horribly fatty ( streaky bacon really needs to be very well cooked). Unfortunately, the continental style buffet was hugely disappointing with little more than half grapefruits, small croissants and various bowls of cereals on offer. Now, we are always down for breakfast at least an hour before their finishing time so no excuse for not replenishing a cheese and meat board which only had 2 measly squares of cheese and one a scrap of ham left. Incidentally, it sat like that for a full forty minutes and was only replenished as we got up to leave, by which time it had been empty for ages.. It was a similar case with what little stewed fruit was on offer and the mini croissants weren't replenished either. So the buffet breakfast is where this hotel really needs to pull it's socks up (after all, it was something like £10 per head for that option). It was one of the poorest, most unimaginative and uninspiring buffet spreads I've ever come across.

That said, we would certainly return to the Dakota and the restaurant and have already recommended it to friends. A pleasure to stay in a place with such lovely and motivated staff who are a credit to their team and their managers.

My sister booked us the lazy Sunday offer as a Xmas present. We had a beautiful suite with large TV and excellent tea coffee making facilities, very comfortable bed. No bath - only a shower with plentiful toiletries.
Had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent and service good too. Would highly recommend.

We have stayed at the Dakota on a number of occasions but I've never actually got around to writing a review - until now.

On approach, the hotel looks a little bit like an IT office, but as you get nearer the sleek charcoal-grey and blue strip-lighting makes it look very cool and very different from most hotels. Inside, the low-lighting and excellent interior design throughout make for an incredibly peaceful, yet slick and classy environment - it's almost therapeutic!

The rooms follow the ambience of the rest of the hotel. They are well appointed and decorated, with large, comfortable beds, and spotlessly clean throughout. The bathrooms are generally small (even in the suites - but who wants to spend all their time in the bathroom anyway?) but are perfectly appointed and, again, are spotlessly clean. It's worth noting that of all the rooms I've stayed in only a shower is available - no bath. (I don't know if they have a bath in any of the rooms.)

Having stayed in all of the room types I would recommend the Junior Suite as I think it offers the best value for money. The room is large, very comfortable, and excellently appointed. The basic rooms are very good but I have found them a little too small to laze about in comfortably all day long, however they are perfect if you intend to be out and about for most of the day and need a comforting and stylish base to rest your head.

The food is genuinely excellent and reasonably priced. Do go for a 'breakfast included' option if you can - it's well worth it.

A minute’s walk away is a Tesco which is excellent for nipping out to when you need some essentials. Nearby is the beautiful cobble-stoned South Queensferry – definitely worth an afternoon’s stroll. I would also recommend the fascinating boat trip up the Forth to Inchcolm Island, or you could simply wonder along the cobbles and admire the magnificent Forth Rail Bridge (don’t forget your camera). Generally the Dakota is an excellent base for exploring the area, and the centre of Edinburgh is only a 20-odd minute drive away. There is also a train station nearby and an excellent bus service.

These days, too many ‘boutique’ hotels are style over substance, with many being over-priced, garish, tacky, and overly self-aware, staffed with people who simply don’t care. With confident ease, Dakota has triumphantly managed to avoid all the potential pitfalls and stamp its own mark of individuality to be a top-notch hotel with a wonderful atmosphere of classy slickness and excellence.

If garish, over-priced, plasticky hotels are your thing, then avoid here. If you like classy, tasteful abodes, which make you feel special, and where the staff really do care about you, book a weekend at Dakota and you’ll be mightily impressed.

Room Tip: The basic room is fine if it's just as a base. Go for a suite if you're planning some lazing...

I stayed here with my boyfriend for three nights over New Year. The hotel was dog friendly, which was the main reason we went for it and it was amazing being able to have our pup sit with us in the lobby while we enjoyed drinks and bar meals. The restaurant is pricey but the food is definitely worth it, as is the service from the staff friendly and efficient. We had a dog friendly room and one minor criticism was that we only had a shower (I would expect a bath in a hotel or this standard and price) and the shower had a curtain, rather than a proper cubicle.....again not what you would expect in this standard of room. I would have liked a minibar to keep drinks chilled and if you get warm at night definitely request a room overlooking the bridge to get a breeze into your room.

These are all minor details though and overall would thoroughly recommend the hotel and would most certainly return in the future.

Room Tip: Bridge view

We stayed at the Dakota during Hogmanay 2013/14. The hotel is very comfortable and modern, the staff are helpful and will take care of anything you need, the bar served fantastic cocktails and the restaurant cannot be faulted. The only downside is that the rooms are very hot (despite air con) and the location is a bit of pain unless you have a car. Although the local train station is only a short 15min walk and only take 20mins to get into the city. One warning.... DO NOT eat at the Frankie and Benny's across the road, it was the most disgusting food I'd ever eaten!
