Casa Rural Aroma de Campo
Ranked #1 of 1 Curubande B&B and Inns

This was our first B&B during our trip to Costa Rica. The B&B is located very close to the park, which is convenient because the road to the parc is not very good (so you don't have to go back an forth on a bad road). The place is run by a Belgium (who was not there when we visited, but his friend Ive was. Ive was very service minded and clearly wanted to make us feel comfortable. The small scale of the B&B gives it an intimate, homelike feeling. Dinner is served on a large table with all the guests (which during our visit happen to be all Dutch) which allowed us to learn from other travelers where to go (or not to go) during our next stops. The rooms are not luxuruous, but it nice to open the double doors to the veranda and step out to sit down in your rocking chair reading some of the photobooks of Costa Rica. The pool is a natural pool (fairly small) that is using water from one of the rivers.

The staff was great...friendly, helpful, and arranged all tours for us. The food was really good too and this is a plus since there's not much around unless you want to make the 25 km trek back to Liberia for dinner and meals. Breakfast is included and it is quite filling. The only thing to keep in mind is that it is cash only. Don't expect to be able to pay with credit. I learned that the hard way and had to trek back to Liberia to go to an ATM. Ughhh! :-)

We had a very pleasant time during our 2 days stay. Rooms are basic but very lovely and nice as well as the whole of the B&B. Breakfast (included) and dinner (optional 16 $) are served on a large table together with the other guests. Fine quality food and nice to communicate with the other guests. A place to recommend !

My wife and I stayed for Christmas Eve through to Boxing Day and had a fantastic time, including a lovely 4 course Christmas dinner. The location is great, a few hundred metres from the first entrance to the Rincon de la Vieja national park, 15 k or so up an an okay unpaved road off the InterAmericana a few kms north of Liberia. No need for a 4X4 for the main drive, but to get up the drive of the hotel it is probably necessary (and also to explore some of the park the lazy way). The hotel is set in a few acres of land, and has 6 or so rooms on a hillside overlooking the countryside - great views. Guests eat around a big communal table in the courtyard, which can be hit or miss depending on the other folk there. We had a Christmas meal with 10 or so lovely people, the guests were from all over the world. There is a small natural pool in the grounds (for lazing after a days hiking in the park rather than laps).

Our room was lovely and quiet, with a huge bathroom, hot shower and lots of nice furniture - the whole house had lovely furniture. All of the rooms were painted in bright colours. The owners were around and very friendly. Whilst we were there it was being run by a Belgian guy, who gave us loads of help with the local area and showing us the best routes in the park and even some free walks (you have tp pay $10 to get into the park although well worth it). The national park itself is also fantastic, waterfalls with pools to swim in and the volcano itself. The inclusive breakfast was a buffet of fresh fruit (pineapple, melon etc), gallo pinto and eggs, with teas and coffee and cereals. They also offer dinner (1 choice) every night which was $16, a 3 course meal that was homecooked and delicious, good sized portions as well. Beer and soft drinks were self service from a fridge with an honesty system, which I like, nice laid back atmosphere, added to by the pets wandering around as well; two friendly (and quiet) dogs, a cat and a wake up call in the form of a parrot.

I wish I could remember the name of the woman who ran this bed and breakfast style accommodation. She truly made us feel at home immediately. My one recommendation (outside of that you definitely need your own car in this area), is to call ahead. We made that mistake and they were out of rooms for the night. She did, however, offer us a tent for $7pp/per day. That wound up being great. We told her that it was our honeymoon and she decorated the aerobed with flowers found in her garden. The pool (I believe there were pictures in someone else's rating) was gorgeous and overlooked the stunning mountainside.
The rooms looked very cute. The dinner was $16, but worth every penny. I think it was the best dinner I had in all of Costa Rica.
My cleanliness rating can be attributed to the shared shower that we were using because we were in the tent. It could use a big scrub down. However, it seemed to me like the rooms may have their own shower. Besides that, everything else was perfectly sanitary and I would not let that stop me from recommending it to anyone or visiting the area again myself.
My only other recommendation is that if you are into zip lining...do the one through Adventure Tours at Rincon de la Vieja. It was amazing. There was a 10 year old girl who said this was her third zip lining in Costa Rica and that this one was the best.
Enjoy! Go to Aroma, you won't regret it!

Very nice house, a nice set up, it ought to be more tidier and fresher. The set up of the breakfast is nice, but is quality is poor and the quantity is a shame. Diner however was good . It is very close to the entrance of the National Park Rincon de la Vieja, but you better come with your own car.

This hacienda has only 5 or 6 rooms around a pleasant courtyard. Guests use their meals at a giant table (see pictures). Very pleasant when you are with (new) friends. Several seating area's around the courtyard.
Friendly Belgian owner who lives in San Jose. Sylvia, the German manager runs the place well.
Rooms are basic but OK. No airconditioning. No bug screens. A lot of bugs, spiders and other creatures outside. It may be hot in your room.
Pool is being build (?), but was not available in March 2008.
Meals are good but you have to be on time. Non alcoholic drinks self service. You may want to bring your own bottle of wine or beer.
The National Park is about 10km North on a road that is hard to master. It will take a half hour or more in a 4WD. everything else is also at least a 10km drive.
Beautiful swimmable waterfall close to the park and 2 hour walk in the park itself. Recommend the horseback tour that can be arranged by the hotel.
