“Captain Buddy is the best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

We took an early morning tour on April 10. We were picked up at our hotel in the Quarter and, after picking up several other adventurers, we were driven to Slidell. Our bus driver, whose name I don't remember, was excellent. His commentary about the damage the area suffered from Katrina became a litany, with his repeated phrase, "It could not be repaired, and so it came down." We had a glimpse into what people and communities suffered.

We had a short wait in Slidell while all fees were paid, and then we were called to our boat. We were so incredibly lucky to be assigned to the care of Captain Buddy, occasionally known as Captain Crash. Extremely knowledgeable about the swamp and life on the river, he taught us about different ways of raising a house to protect it from flooding, different river craft, and about how the ancient lift bridge works.

We were very lucky to see 4 alligators, and Captain Buddy told us how to tell how large an alligator is by estimating the distance from the bottom of his eyes to the tip of his snout. A 6" snout measurement means a 6' alligator. We learned about alligator farming.

We talked about gumbo, and Captain Buddy showed us how everything needed for gumbo could be found right there along the river and in the swamp. He pointed out the catfish lines, the arrowroot plants, wild rice, mushrooms on the base of trees, herons nests, and turtles. He told stories of moonshiners meeting at a certain tree in the swamp. And as we glided through the cypress trees, drinking in the beauty and peace of the swamp, he told us, "You came to see the alligators, but this is what you will remember."

He demonstrated his famous pig call, and we delighted in the appearance of 4 wild pigs. Our tough captain shared that he didn't want people hunting these pigs; he felt they were pets.

I have taken tours in many different parts of the world, and I can state unequivocally that Captain Buddy was one of the 3 best tour guides I have ever had.

“worth the trip!”

I was skeptical about what this trip would be. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised. It was informative and lots of fun! Our captain, Troy, was excellent as well as our driver Derek. Very knowledgeable.

“A Great Day on the Bayou”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

From the moment we were picked up to the moment we were dropped off, we had a great time on this excursion. Our driver, Victorio, was on time and provided us with humorous anecdotes and good natured barbs on our drive from New Orleans to Slidell. However he also showed respect to those impacted by Katrina as we drove by abandoned homes still standing years after the disaster. His reflections made it apparent that Katrina's devastation still weighed heavy in the hearts and minds of many people in the region.
Getting organized at the tour site was straight forward and we were soom whisked off to our boat with Captain Jeff. Captain Jeff did a great job in informing us of the people, the history, the economy and most importantly the flora and fauna of the area. He pointed out many types of trees and exposed us to all kinds of critters including several snakes, a family of wild boers and a very big gator! We felt felt privilaged to see so much wildlife. Our Captain's laid back attitude complimented the slow moving bayou waters.
I was hesitant to do this kind of event as I thought it might lack authenticity and be a tad too 'touristy' for my (and my wife's) liking. I am thankful I did not miss it. I would recommend if taking a day from New Orleans and having a Cajun Encounter.

Captain Mark was informative and entertaining as well! My family enjoyed the whole experience! The weather on 5 April (Friday) was perfect for viewing many species. A well worth trip, which I have told many people to take advantage of.

“Heaps of Fun”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

From the pick up to the journey out everything went smoothly. We got lots of information from our driver Adam on the way out. He gave us information on Katrina and the area that we were passing through.
We opted to go on the smaller vessel with no children allowed. There were only five of us so it was an excellent decision. Captain John was quietly knowledgable and informative about the animals and vegetation. We saw a good variety of animals, birds and reptiles. The alligators were exciting to see and he made sure we all got good photos.
I would definitely go again.
