“Swamps were surprisingly beautiful and saw a lot of wild life... But only 3 alligators as its too cold for them now”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013 via mobile

My son and I drove out to Slidell from the quarter and it was a quick 35 minutes. The boat was quite full, but everyone had a great seat facing out. The alligators are currently hibernating, but we were out on a sunny day and saw 3 little guys... Est 4 feet long. We saw many birds, a few snakes, a raccoon and pig. We got some great photos and the boat ride was pleasant. Our captain was quite entertaining and incredibly knowledgeable. We would recommend the adventure.

“Great time except for the screaming child”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 25, 2012 via mobile

Captain Rob was wonderful and we recommend this tour... However we had a screaming child on the bus ride from the hotel and the same screaming child on the tour. Screaming child and swamp tour do not mix -- if you notice this is about to happen ask to be on a different boat.

“No Gators in Fall/Winter”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

Every ad for this shows a photoshopped picture of the biggest gator you ever seen by the tour boat. What they dont say is Gators hibernate. When the heat goes so do the gators. They sleep at the bottom of the swap for 5 months. No one mentioned that until we were all on the boat with our guide Captain Mike. Everyone was disappointed to hear our only chance of seeing any gators is perhaps a small one as the big fellas are all at the bottom and only bring their noses up for air once and awhile. This is why my review is only 2 stars. They should really tell you that up front. So I took off 2 stars for this. I took off the another star for the complete clusterf'n'mess it is to book this thing. The 2 stars I gave it are all due to Captain Mike, the actual guide who was great.

We booked an afternoon tour online. The website took our money. Oddly there was no confirmation regarding time. So we called in. These people should realize that tourists cant be eating up data and calling plans while in the USA. For us its very expensive to be calling you chasing you around to deliver what you promise. They informed us that we were booked on the 2:45 but couldnt guarentee it. You see they only run a tour if there are enough people. OK ... again this is a huge waste of time. Advertise what you can offer, not "well we might do it if it suits us". So we chose the 10am instead which they said was full enough to guarentee us.

The next money we get an email at 9:45 telling us our 2:45 is cancelled and they'd like us to be waiting for the 10am pickup. Good thing we already were waiting. Unorganized? oh yeah. Each time we talked to them they asked us to pay again to and we had to point out we already paid. This is annoying. The lackluster attitude is not charming - its makes you all look like morons.

The transportation out to the swamp adds another $25 to the cost. The driver complained about other customers several times the entire drive. Talked over the mike about how people arent ready sometimes and how its so rude. Talked about people who dont like the USA can pack their bags and leave. This was not in response to anyone talking - he was just ranting. Then he tells us all his wife is Chinese and he is moving to China ...... so are you a proud American or not? NO difference to me but if you are going to rant so strong I'd expect you to stand for something. Of course the driver wants tips. The buss had 20 x $25 for the return trip. Thats a pretty profitable shuttle. Yet this "good old boy" wants his tips too. Why? To take to China? I mean I listen to you complain and you want $? What do you say about us when we get off the bus? He complains how people leave stuff on the bus and poor him has to return it, etc etc. I get it already - you hate the customer, can you shut up?

OK with that out of the way let get to the good. Our guide is Captain Mike. Mike is a rough biker looking guy. We soon realize he's also a nice guy with a very calm demeanor. Mike has good knowledge and manages to find us a baby gator. This he informs us, is the best we're going to get at this time of year. Now the swamp is a nice place, some areas just downright gorgeous. Mike knows all the wildlife, plants, etc. He navigates the boat like a pro. Frankly he saved this company from getting an all out bad rating. Both stars are for him. Had the other aspects of this company matched they may have been 5 stars.

So go when its hot, get Captain Mike and you probably will see a gator. But go when its cold and you see only swamp and turtles. This is OK, as I said some areas are gorgeous nature. But you go to see a big ol gator right? Make sure you actually have that chance. I would suggest your own transport if possible. Its a 30-40 mile drive. The shuttle is a good idea and would have been great if they guy wasnt ranting and begging.

There is nothing at the swamp but a shack like bathroom facility and giftshop. Eat before and use the bathroom before. You'll thank me for that.

Hi lashing,

Thank you for visiting us, and for taking the time to write us a review. We take feedback very seriously here at Cajun Encounters, and use it as a basis for discussion in perfecting our tours.

In regard to gators - it's true they like to come out and sun themselves in the warmer weather, but it's important to note it can be warm any day here in Louisiana. It is winter, and today it's in the 50's. Yesterday the high was 74 degrees.

It's for this reason that we call our tour a "swamp tour" and not a "gator tour."

We also tour throughout one of the last wetland preserves in the state - the Honey Island Swamp. The animals are wild and free here, and the area is outrageously beautiful. You have to trust us when we say that we have NOT Photoshopped any pictures on our brochures.

In regard to booking online, we are sorry to hear your frustration. This is something we are working to improve, but in the meantime it does note on our site that you will be emailed within 24 hours with a confirmation.

The cancellation issue is inundating to us, as well as guests, and we could not imagine having to deal with it while on vacation. The reason we do have cancellations, though, is because we take great importance in the value of our tour - weather, wind, vision restrictions can (but not often) cause us to cancel a tour time. Again, this is not often, but it happened to you, and we wish it hadn't have had to.

We are bringing your review to the attention to our drivers, as well as to Captain Mike.

Again, we appreciate your review, and the time you spent with us here at Cajun Encounters. We hope that you enjoyed your stay while in the Crescent City.

“triple tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2012

my friend and i went to new orleans not knowing what to expect. we did the city bus sightseeing tour on the hop on hop off which i wouldnt recommend it is expensive at 40$ and doesnt go far enough. we called in a visitors information centre opposite cafe du mode and spoke to dave in there he sorted out our trips for us.. we did the city tour with cajun encounters and it was excellent the driver was stacey and she knew the are well she took us out to where the damage of katrina could still be seen, and explained what was happening there we went out to the garden district as well to cementary no 3 out towards the superbowel. she made it a very pleasant trip for us.
we also wanted to see the plantations and had read about laura, but dave recommended seeing the two laura and oak alley which i highly recommend.the lady amerythist at laura was highly amusing and made it very interesting. whilst oak alley was more refined, even though they dress up for the part. well worth seeing.
we also booked the dinner cruise on the natchez paddle streamer. this is a pleasant evening to go down the mississipi even though it was a bit cold food was a buffet style and a jazz band played only critisim was that they could have played longer.
the most amazing trip was the swamp tour we went out on a small boat and i have to say the tow american farmers from kentucky made the day they were highly amusing especially when calling the wild boars. we did manage to see the aligators even though they were little ones . this company is great and im glad they mad our time in new orleans pleasant

“Wonderful Tours”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2012

We picked Cajun Encounters because there was a representive in our hotel. She was very helpful. We chose a combo tour of the city and a Swamp Tour. Both were excellent. Karen was our tour guide for the City tour, she was very informative. She took us through the French Quarter, a cemetary, St. Charles street, the area hit by Hurricane Katrina. Both tours were well worth the money. We could never have seen everything we saw on our own. Rob, I think was his name, was our captain on the Swamp Tour. He was very good and got us right up by the snakes, wild hogs and alligators. He was very knowledgeable of the swamp and answered all of our questions. He had some pretty good jokes too. We will choose Cajun Encounters on our next New Orleans trip.
