Review of Ponchatoulas

Ponchatoulas
Ranked #1 of 102 Restaurants in Ruston
Certificate of Excellence
Description: Ponchatoulas was founded in February 1996, by original owner Johnny Gaudet, who then partnered with Chris Garriga in 2004. With a passion for good food and fun, Gaudet opened the restaurant on the bustling Park Avenue in downtown Ruston. The building housed a fire station in the early 1900's, complete with the big red fire truck and even horse-drawn carriages lining the downtown streets. Some years later, the location became a landmark for one of history's music legends, Elvis Presley. Presley recorded in an upstairs studio of the then KRUS radio station. It wasn't until the late 1980's that the building was converted to a restaurant, not much different from the current site. The full-service restaurant offers patrons a wide variety menu that includes appetizers of seafood gumbo, fried mushrooms and boudin balls, as well as from the fryer servings of fried crawfish tails, shrimp, oyster and catfish. Ponchatoulas is famous for their crawfish étouffée, red beans and rice, crab cakes, poboys, and white chocolate bread pudding. Open for lunch and dinner, patrons often come for the free live entertainment and happy hour drink specials. The restaurant's Cajun ambiance will make you feel as though you are sitting in the French Quarter of New Orleans. If you'd rather take that New Orleans feeling home to your dining table, Ponchatoulas makes it easy with heat and serve to go orders.

We both had crawfish etouffe with the fried shrimp add on. The fried shrimp was very good. The etouffe was tasty, but could have been warmed up a few degrees more. Our servers were polite and prompt.

Warning: Google Map directions are inacurate! They led us to the heart of the campus. Call for real directions.

“Nice restaurant in Ruston”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

I had the good fortune of eating at Ponchatoulas today for lunch. I came in about 3 and sat at the bar to eat. The staff were friendly and accomodating. The atmosphere was casual, but nice. THE FILE GUMBO WAS AMAZING! I followed that up with the creole and etoufee to go. The creole was very good and I "sampled" the etoufee and it was good too.

If you are near Ruston, eat here! I know I will be there again!

“Excellent gumbo”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

This is a very casual restaurant, with tv's showing various games being played. Food is very good, as is the beer. Gumbo is good and so is the shrimp poboy. Onion rings were a tad overcooked-but still tasty-geniune onion rings-not pieces.

“Wow! I love cajun food.”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

I had seafood gumbo, pasta salad, onion rings, and stuffed catfish with crawfish etoufee. This was really good. My husband had the shrimp platter and salad with their own southwestern dressing which was excellent. If we're ever back in Ruston, we'll definitely eat here and the sister restaurant, the Log Cabin Mesquite Grill. Both were excellent.

A must when visiting Ruston. One of our families favorite local restaurants. The stuffed catfish is amazing.
