Papa's is fun, pure and simple. Good food--not fancy--the atmosphere is a little loud, but don't come here for solitude...

A friend and I were in Natchitoches last week for the day and walked down the main street looking for a place to have lunch. We went into Papa's because we thought we may have eaten there before. We both ordered the fried catfish and shrimp combo. It was outstanding. The three gigantic shrimp and catfish filets were fried to perfection. Shrimp was fresh, only lightly battered and catfish was perfectly seasoned with a crispy, cornmeal crust. If I did not live two hours away, I would eat there regularly. It is a small-town, down-home type place in an old building with inside brick walls, but cute. Could not have asked for better service.

We tried Papas on a few occasions and never found the food to live up to the hype. Almost every where we went folks told us to get the steak at Papas. Three of us ordered steak one night and it was all bad. The steak was cooked to order(mine med rare) but it was so tough you could hardly chew it. Lots of grissel and connective tissue on the meat. We went back a couple of times to try the lunch. The burger is just OK, nothing to write home about and wasnt really hot when it was served. The bar tenders are really nice(and cute) but that does not make up for lousy food. Id recommend going down the street to Pioneer pub instead.

This week, with colleagues, we decided to grab a burger at Papa’s for lunch. In summation, premium prices for below average food and service. The young and tanned wait staff are more interested in flirting with peers than waiting on patrons….and the prices for mediocre food, served near room tempature…well a burger, fries and soda with tax and tip (which probably will not be deserved) will be close to $14, was too much for what you get. Go up or down the street, but pass Papa’s by.

I was there for the 4th of July weekend. On the 3rd of July most places were already closed and this small bar and grill was open until 10 PM (no other places are open after that). We went in there for some drinks and a snack. Great service, nice people. They also own Mama's Oyster House next door.
