I have been here a number of times. The food and service are normally great. This visit was a little disappointing. The food was
only warm, and tasted a little old, as if it was cooked earlier that evening. The Gumbo was Great ,as always. Maybe just an off night , but it did disappoint.

So....we were on an RV adventure, traveling through the south, and decided to stop in Lafayette as our first stop in Louisiana. We went downtown and it seemed like the street were rolled up! I was looking for some real southern cuisine and we only found a Mexican restaurant with a band playing southern music. Strange. On top of that, we are from CA and the "mexican" food was really bad. Anyway, we kept looking around and found Don's. We went inside and it was a beautiful bar. We had a coupe of drinks and some crawfish bisque (which was amazing!). The bar started to "clean up" around 9;15pm. Really? I couldn't believe there wasn't anyone in there. The bisque was wonderful, but we didn't try anything else cuz it was time to go!

We were advised to visit the original Don's by the hotel clerk having had a great meal at the newer Dons Hut earlier this year. On approach from the street you already know you'll be taken back to a time when your grandparents filled the place as THE place to be in Lafayette in the 60s. It's still that place, that decor and those waitresses. Except someone else's grandparents now sit there. Once you get past the musty smell, the dated basket of crackers and old photos here's what you get: good seafood gumbo, good broiled shrimp and good stuffed tilapia. Don't order the bread pudding my husband called it the worst he's ever had. Sorry Don's you have good food and a better newer location nearby but this one needs a serious makeover.

Went to Don's for lunch based on a local recommendation. Had the bacon wrapped shrimp/oyster brochette. Anything wrapped in bacon is good right? .... Wrong? Way over cooked, old stale rice, and french fries that were like from the grocery store frozen section. Sorry for this negative review but this place needs to improve big time. Beer was good but thanks goes to Abita Brewing Co.

Don's is a Lafayette tradition that has been around for years, but I have to ask ... who is running the kitchen?

I came into Don's on a Sunday with a group of 15 for lunch; we HAD an advance reservation. At 12:25, when we ordered, they were out of the special of the day!! Who runs out of the special halfway thru lunch? This forced all of us to order other items at a much higher price than the special would have cost. The waitress was unapologetic. Whoever is cooking in the kitchen is not doing the restaurant any favors by the old "bait and switch"; the special was clearly advertised on the menu and at the front of the house. Me and 14 other people are very disappointed with Don's. I wish I could have found the manager, but there was none to be found.
