T'Frere's Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #2 of 3 Lafayette B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 9, 2010

When our family travels we always look for accommodations that offer an alternative to standard chain motels, and T'Frere's didn't disappoint in that regard. The house, like many in Louisiana, is brimming with antiques. The Victorian ambience was a bit much for my husband's simpler tastes, but our 11-year-old daughter and I found it charming.

The three of us stayed here in the lovely Mary Room -- it had a beautiful wood antique canopy bed, plus a smaller single bed for our daughter - just right. However -- and this was unfortunately a big drawback: our room was at the very front of the house, and the traffic on the busy road directly in front of the B&B kept me awake well into the night, and woke me up in the morning. You would never know from the website or brochures that T'Frere's sits on the corner of a bustling intersection. We were quite surprised when we drove up, as we expected it would be out in the country, or at least on a quiet road. But once you're inside, you don't notice it -- unless you are trying to sleep in one of the front bedrooms.

The advantage is that the B&B is centrally located in Lafayette, and if you can overlook the noise element, you will be rewarded with a delicious breakfast and amiable hospitality. Maugie kindly made reservations for us for a swamp tour, and was happy to offer suggestions for our sightseeing. She is vintage Cajun with a lively sense of humor.

We weren't able to arrive till 6:00, so we missed the reception hour from 4--5 with the juleps and canapes. They had some drinks waiting for us in the fridge, though, and had saved a tray of the appetizers (yummy toast rounds with a crab spread) for us to pop in the oven in the kitchen -- a nice touch. But we wished we would have arrived for the special welcome on the screened porch.

Thank you for your time shared here with us in cajun country!! We hope you return home with the joi de vivre that is so contageous and heart warming. If daddy didn't give you a hug on your way out or mom didn't wave and tell you she loved you or you didn't hear me play my accordion for you, hopefully this message will reach you and give you a smile. Bringing you back to our great times together, or some wonderful memory of true cajun life..

T'Frere bed and breakfast has fabulous food and great hosts. The B and B is relatively small and allows for the personal touch. Traffic around the B and B is intense. It calms down a lot in the evening. If you expect a country inn, it isn't, but if prepared for the traffic and related noise, the yard and balcony are relaxing. Really nice people, completely knowledgeable about the area.

After reading the reviews (and we all read the bad ones first) i was a bit skittish about bnb's. In hind sight i was baffeled how anyone could find this town stuffy when quite possibly it is the most charming and friendly place on earth.. literally... If i die i wanna come back as a cajun.. seriously. Ive traveled quite a bit and this place is like the anti-new york. If you want perfect everything, polished everything and ketch a heart attack at 45 because of stress, then this area may not be for you. Anyway, upon driving up you literally feel like your stepping back in time. The house is nesseled behind a hedgerow and kind of grows when you look at it. Upon entering the front door the ambiance swallows you. Pat was there with a charming smile and the smell reminded me of my childhood. I think that its imporntant to get there between the check in times 4:30 - 5:30 because i really dont think the expierence would have been near the same. The little candles were lit on the glassed in pourch and we were served the perfect coctail after a long day of driving. We werent sure what to do with our evening but we always like to ad lib when traveling. Boy were we lucky. Our last hotel was a marriott. The person behind the counter seemed further away than their fake smile and offered no help. Pat and Maugie literally hand picked an itenerary for us which included an assortment of the best local restaurants and dance halls. They even called and made all the reservations for us! They also booked and planned our travels for the following day which included their own swamp tour guide, a cultural visit (which was free) to the jean lafiette museum, and a custom planned trip through the countryside. They even gave us our own maps with their hand written directions for us to keep.. We went to the downtown area and ate an amazing gumbo at dons. Afterward we ventured over to a little hole in the wall place called the blue moon. There was a belly filled sweaty and soulful (zydeco?), singer everyone there kinduf sensed we were tourists and welcomed us as friends. They tought us how to 2 step and by the end of the night we were all exchanging phone numbers and planning our next visits.
The morning came soon as 730am our alarm went off to start getting ready for the 8am breakfast (sharp). YIKES!! We were supriesed to find a table full of travelers just like ourselves with stories and child like interests about everything involving cajun. The breakfast was amazing. An egg kiesh cassarole, sausage, stuffed potatoe and a french bread. I particularly liked the local syrup on the table made of sugar cane. We finished up eating and got ready for our days adventures. Upon leaving, pat gave us a hug and kissed my wife on the cheek (too cute!). I swear we didnt want to leave. Kinduf like a life that was a dream that we wanted to live over and over again...

but then again... thats what a vacation is supposted to be like.. rite??

Once we got through Lafayette to Verot School Rd in a busy 3:30 traffic, we found it was worth the trouble. (You might plan better than we did and arrive away from "going to and coming home" traffic).

Pat and Maugie are a delight. The cottage we stayed in was truly "antique" but comfortable - really in a garden with plenty of song birds. Highly recommend this to everyone except young adults I would say.

My husband and I have just returned from five days in Cajun country - two miserable nights spent at Cajun Cabins in Breaux Bridge, and three delightful nights spent here. Talk about night and day!

Maugie, Pat and son John are perfect hosts. They are hospitable, helpful and professional, and the facility is beautifully and immaculately maintained. All three of them have the ability to know when guests want to chat, and when to leave them alone. Your stay here revolves around your needs, not theirs.

When you come for T'Julips and canapes in the afternoon, they will help you choose where to eat that evening based on the kind of food and experience you're looking for, then make reservations for you. They also make sure your days spent in Cajun country live up to your expectations and supply you with whatever information, directions, reservations or literature you need to make them enjoyable. And they genuinely are interested in hearing about your experiences at the places you've eaten and seen.

Breakfasts are different and wonderful, and getting to meet and chat with other guests at the breakfast table is enjoyable. I must admit, I've always stuck my nose up at "semi home cooking" until experiencing T'Frere's breakfasts. I'll never attempt to make a pancake from scratch again!

We stayed in the Bourree Room... it was comfy, spacious and quiet (even with neighbors next door.) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this room with its comfy king bed!

Would I stay here again? Definitely, yes! This place is a bargain at twice the price! Frommer's review summed it up best... Just stay here, okay?

If like us, you want to spend a few days getting to know Cajun country and experience the best of Cajun hospitality, you can do it all from Lafayette and T'Frere's. If we had realized how centrally located Lafayette is, and how delightful T'Frere's would be, we could have saved ourselves a couple of miserable nights elsewhere.

We arrived at the B&B after 6 pm, so did not get to sample their evening snacks and drinks. Since it was after 6 pm, we were told that an envelope with the key to our room and other information would be in the mailbox waiting for us, which it was. I had trouble opening the door, but not with the key. The front door sticks badly and one really has to push or pull to get it open. Once inside, the B&B looked pleasant enough. Our room was the Garden Room, upstairs. The stairway to upstairs was tiny and narrow - hauling our luggage up and down the stairs was quite an experience. Our room was lovely, and the king sized bed was comfortable, but the room needs to be refreshed - peeling wallpaper. The bathroom was down the hall - not a far walk, but outside of the room nevertheless. Thankfully, no one was staying in the other room. O.K., the bathroom - the door locks with just a latch, and did not stay closed without it; peeling wallpaper, very tiny sink and no room to put your toiletries. The bathroom has a door that leads out to a balcony. It was storming the night we arrived and a little rain came into the bathroom through the balcony door.
On a more positive side, even though the B&B was close to a busy road, it was quiet inside our room, and we did have a good night's sleep, and there is plenty of paved parking. One thing that kind of irked me was that the next morning we were getting dressed and didn't make it down for breakfast at exactly 8:00, although we were in the process of getting dressed, someone came upstairs ringing a bell to let us know breakfast was served. Breakfast - a mixed fruit cup, 3 pancakes split in half and stuffed with creme cheese and served with 3 types of warm fruit compote on top of each, 2 slices of bacon, orange juice and coffee. It was good, but that's way too much sugar and way too much food for me that early in the morning. Also, checkout is at 10 am so be prepared to hustle after eating breakfast. All in all, we had a pleasant stay, but it did not have the wow factor for me that all of the websites talk about -perhaps in an earlier time...... We'll have to stay once more to see if things are any different the 2nd time around.
