“Wonderful Sunday afternoon!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2008

The re-creations blend in well with the original structures to show a nice representation of life in the bayou country in the early years.
The real treat is the live music on Sunday afternoons. Authentic creole artist perform and the locals dance to the beat. A great way to spend the day. Well worth the $8 admission for adults. Kids would find it interesting as well.

“A bit too quaint and contrived”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2007

As a collection of restored historic structures and replicas of vernacular buildings, Vermilionville does fairly well.

However, its version of 18th and 19th century Louisiana folklife falls short in many respects. If you are seeking out a "trip back in time", you are likely to be disappointed. The overall impression of Vermilionville is an attraction that is still trying to cash in on the long-dead "Cajun" craze of the late 1980s, promoting a quaint and contrived picture of the early inhabitants of south-central Louisiana.

Recorded contemporary Cajun dance music blares from unseen speakers, employees in inaccurate "peasant" costumes tell jokes and speak with fake accents, and the historical and cultural reality of the region is obscured behind something a little too Disney-esque for my tastes.

The sad thing about such "museums" is that they perpetuate stereotypes and trivialize the customs of those who came before.

“A Must See... True Meaning of CAJUN”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2005

We have been going to Lafayette for weekend trips for years and had heard of VermilionVille but had never gone... Finally we went...
This is an Acadian Village set up with buildings that were brought in from surrounding areas... Some of the buildings consists of a school, church, blacksmith and several houses... On weekends they have guides dressed in period attire that will take you on a walking tour of the grounds, telling you stories and giving you history of the Acadians and how they were ousted from Novia Scotia and why...
They also have a Music/Dance Hall in which on weekends they have local musicians that volunteer to play French/Cajun Music... and if you feel like toe tapping, your more than welcome to do so and will feel right at home...
