Wow, what an amazing experience. The trek to Hang en cave was ok but prepare yourself for the walk back up the mountain. The entire trip was well organised and the guides and porters were fantastic as was the food both in the cave and at the local village. The camp site was immaculate as was the equipment we borrowed. It was great being on a tour of 16 people from all over the world and sitting around the long table at night playing games and sharing travelling experiences of Vietnam. We loved our afternoon swim in the cave which was quite refreshing after a long, hot and sweaty walk and exploring further into the cave on day 2. We will definitely come back in the near future to visit Son Doong. Thank you to Seven and Anettta our fantastic guides!

We chose a private tour, as the thought of me (50+ year old, not terribly fit) holding anyone up was just too mortifying …!

Great trek, the first day 8km walking/scrambling over rocks was tough, but mostly because of the heat (high 30s) and humidity. We got to our camp relatively early, so I guess we could have taken longer if we needed to.

Day 2 was fab, and was spent mostly swimming (with life vests) through wet caves with our head torches on. We then had a shorter trek back to base (about 4km, I think). However, when we got to the road, we dug our heels in, and said that we didn't fancy the longish walk along the boring road in the heat and humidity, and our guide (Lam? great guy, and amazing card-player!) kindly organised for us all to be taken back on the backs of various m/bikes.

Only one slight problem, and that was when, at snack time on Day 2, a whole array of cookies, biscuits, sesame bars etc was produced, but sadly none of which were suitable for our coeliac (gluten intolerant) son. They kindly rustled him up a bowl of pho, but it didn't quite hit the spot. A shame, because 'gluten free' is one of the boxes we ticked on the form we filled in before we went, and we had high hopes that they would be able to deliver...

Our 3 guides, Hieu, Lam and Bao, were absolutely fantastic. They were fun and made everyone introduce themselves on the bus to the office. Their safety briefing was great and I felt safe at all times with them.

The ride from the office into the park is very picturesque. The guys went out of their way (including climbing on top of a billboard to get signal on their phone) to help a girl who had left her passport in Ninh Binh.

We were given helmets before beginning our trek through the forest. The start is all downhill for around an hour and a half. We stopped halfway for lunch in a small village. Lunch was baguettes which you made yourself - delicious and plenty of snacks. The guys refilled water bottles at every stop.

When we arrived at the entrance to the cave we were given gloves and headlamps. The walk into the cave was fun and included lots of scrambling. Once we arrived we were given a tour of the facilities and then went swimming in the pool and jumping off rocks. Once changed we had dinner. There was so much food and it was all delicious. We played cards with all the porters and guides.

We were up early for breakfast which was again delicious. We then donned our head gear and walked to the exit of the cave. Absolutely stunning views of stalagmites and stalactites. The guides explained everything we were seeing and the geology of the area really well. On the way back we walked along the river bed. We left the cave just before 11am and headed back the way we came.

We stopped at the same village for lunch and had pho - the best I had in the whole of Vietnam. We then continued our trek which was all uphill this time. We were all dripping with sweat and being eaten alive by mosquitoes so make sure your bring plenty of insect repellent.

On arrival back at the offie you can use their showers if you are heading straight on a bus or train and you can also order food tgere. If you not you will be dropped back at your hostel after an exhilarating two day trip.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. For me and the rest of my group it was worth every penny! Now I just need to save enough money to go on the Son Dong trip! Thanks to all the guys working at Oxalis!

Hi Emma,

How wonderful to read your review for our team with Hieu, Lam, and Bao.

Thanks for naming this highlight of you 3 month in Southeast Asia. This motivates our team a lot to keep providing once-in-a-life-time cave adventures in this beautiful region of Vietnam.

Oxalis Team looks forward to seeing you again next year on Song Doong Expedition. Please keep in touch and book your tour the soonest in mid-August.

Cheers,
Oxalis Adventure Team
