In one word: incredible- but in the true sense of the term. Even inside Son Doong, the scale of everything is unfathomable as you routinely mistake rock formations as being tens of feet away when they are in fact hundreds away.

We toured with a group of 10 friends (from the U.S, U.K and Japan) mid-march (beginning of the dry season) and got to experience the entire spectrum of weather conditions- hot / humid jungle, rain and lightning storms, fog, sun, you name it. Be warned you will be wet most of the time, but after the first couple river crossings you'll feel right at home.

The beauty of the cave is beyond compare. It makes for an extremely cooperative subject in photography and no matter SLR or smartphone it's very hard to take a bad picture. Bringing a tripod is a good idea if you want to capture 'painted' shots where the porters / crew will light up the various rock formations and pose you in ways so cool you look like a god / goddess.

The entire porter team is exceptionally friendly and the staff appear to be more family than a collection of co-workers at times. The food is phenomenal and (according to the consensus of our group) far better than the local fare in Phong Nha. While the food is mostly Vietnamese, the chefs also offer western favorites like French toast and crepes. Eat as much as you can while you have the chance!

Finally, one last word about the company- they are extraordinarily committed to the preservation of the cave and the well-being of the local community. Even outside of the trekking experience they are working tirelessly to ensure that the cave remains as it is, politically combatting richer investors who would see to adding paved roads, cable cars, and a gift shops to bring in the most buck. Needless to say, if you care at all about the majesty that is mother earth, your money will be well spent.

And big thanks to our guides, Howard and Watto, British caving experts, for their professionalism. (Howard and his wife were the 1st people to explore this cave!)

So why are still reading this? Book while you still can!! :-)

I just returned from Vietnam after going specifically for this adventure.
Everything was carefully planned by Oxalis, and they were always ready to answer any questions we might have had prior to take-off.

When we arrived at the Dong Hoi airport they picked us up and basically took care of us until we flew out again.

I forgot my GoPro in the van on the ride from the airport. They made sure that it was returned to me prior to us going into to the caves.

The staff was super friendly and the food while trekking was surprisingly really good. I'm used to loosing weight while trekking. Now I gained 2 kg!

The trip could be pretty rough for some. It seemed that roughly half of our group had some difficulties around some part of the trek. These ranged from: it's scary to climb downwards, it's scary that there is a cliffedge just to my left that goes down into a seemingly dangerous fall, it's difficult to climb at some parts.

Through all this however the guides were always there to help you, and show you where to put your feet and so on. There is one section where you do a bit more climbing like activities, during this they secure you and help you down so that you are always secured in a rope and thus safe.

I got no mosquito bites during the trek, there were some leeches (noone was bitten in our group I think), some centipedes, and a few bats and birds.

You will have wet feet almost during most of the adventure, but the average temperature of that water is 24 degrees Celcius. So as long as your prepared with good socks and fitting shoes it wont be a problem. Oxalis will inform you what kind of shoes and socks to use.

One of the kindest, most helpful guides we’ve had on a tour so far (there were 3 of them of our group of 16 people). They organize everything very well and take great care of the group. We had a great time meeting other travelers and enjoying the trek and the night in the cave (we did Hang En). The camp there was a unique experience no doubt, you can’t miss it. Being able to go for a swim inside the cave was great after the day of trekking. The tour is a bit expensive but a very enjoyable experience. We would just advise that the transfer they suggested to us from Phong Nha to Dong Hoi at the end of the tour was kind of expensive too (660 dong) while we paid a taxi 350 dong to take us from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha the previous day.

There was a lot of concerns before I have started the trip from friends who have done this before, as I'm not a regular trekking person even though I'm an active physical person. However, all worries had gone since the moment I met and talked to the team here. Honesty, customer-oriented and kind-hearted are words that may not deliver all how I have found and felt after the tour. The tour guides and team are all my friends throughout & after the tour.

Hang Én is remarkable and probably the best place I have ever been through so far. The tour starts with approx. 1km down hill (slipperiness at some points, especially in rainy season), then jungle flat walking, plus up to 15 springs passing. You would visit Doong minority village and about 3pm on 1st day trip you would see the entrance of 3rd biggest cave welcoming and a rocky way to enter is awaiting for you but the view afterward, that memory would stay in your mind forever. On 2nd day, they would take you to different angles of the cave for photography taken, be aware of rocky/sandy walking/climbing. You would finished you tour on the same way back at 4pm, however, there will be 500m of incline walking that is killing reason for many trekkers. Cold drinks are awaiting ahead, no worries!

About the tour operation, as I mentioned above, there are 03 key words to describe about them:

Honesty : They're real professional tour company. You would find them extremely informative before the tour starts and at anytime you have further questions. Throughout the tour, the tour guides would provide you not only general tour's information but also geography/ biology local's knowledge as much as they can, to widen your eyes and safety reasons.

Customer-oriented: Whatever you need at anytime, they will serve you as long as you have requested them in advance and at best they can. They would take care and fed you like their babies. In the middle of jungle and 3rd biggest cave in the world, you have delicious and tasty hot noodle soup that all done by the tour guides and the porter team, not talking about the self invented-toilet in the cave. Nothing is perfect but I wouldn't image how this would have been done better.

Kind-hearted: You might find this point is conflicting with customer-oriented. Yes, they do the job for living and these are their responsibilities, but without a heart of gold, they would just be informative and do the jobs. Here, they enormously care about you, they talk to you not because of curiosity but as friends, they sing stupidly during the trekking, not to annoy you but just to make you laugh and blow your tiredness away (you can ask them to shut up at anytime ;). The company itself has set up foundation to help local minority communities and creating jobs for locals.

Beside, the accommodation at Oxalis is pleasant. We paid 50$ for 1 night/2 pax for mountain view, huge bathroom, comfy beds, internet TV, basic breakfast. The room is 3 stars but with 50$, you can't simply expect it to be 5 stars, not even in Vietnam.

A few notes to people would register to this tour, please keep in mind:
- To never lie about your physical status to the tour so they aware and take care of you. Anything can happen in the middle of the jungle and the more info they know, the better preparation they can make.
- To make special requests before arrival if you have any.
- Please do running/incline walking/stair walking regularly 2-3 weeks before the tour starts. It's not tough tour but excising helps you to make it easier and enjoy the view more.
- 300$ for 2 days/1 night tour is not cheap/expensive, depending on your incomes and everything has limitation. Again, it's trekking tour in middle of jungle, not a leisure activity. Expectations should be managed.
- Because of long walking/trekking, some part would be real hot and inside cave is high humidity. Always drink enough water (not too little, not too much) to keep yourself away from dehydrate and bring your hat.
- Always wear glove (tour provided) because you would pass many rocky parts and poison trees on the way.
- Even you're extremely physical active person, body building or even athletes, you could still dehydrate at any point depending on your body adaptation's level, I have witnessed the real case, it's rare but it happened. In that case, please stay calm and listen to tour guide and never give up, we all can make it. If you see people in your tour has same problem, please inform the tour guide. Among all, you would have to wait for people behind, but please be kind, patient and humility. Don't just request to leave them and go back hotel (if you don't have a bus/train/flight to catch).
- Don't book the flight/bus/train on the same day the tour finishes because you never know what awaits ahead.
- All games that they set up in the night inside the cave, for entertaining only. Winning or losing, don't take it seriously. It's just a game after all, do enjoy the laughs and moments you have.

I'll be back and joining the Tu Lan cave, then Son Doon cave as soon as I can. Until then, my sincere thanking to the tour guides: Vũ, Hiếu, Thà and porter team. You guys make my trip even more remarkable!

This was an amazing trip! It had beautiful scenery, excitement, challenges, nature, and friendly and knowledgable guides. Son Doong cave is still remote and untouched which is refreshing and hard to find in this world. The food was good and the places the tents were pitched were always on soft sandy ground that made for a good nights rest. For those seeking adventure this is a trip of a lifetime!
