This was a great place to chill for a couple days and see a unique part of the country. We corresponded with the farmstay staff ahead of time to reserve a room and arrange pickup from the train station in the early AM in Dong Hoi and it all went off without a hitch. We arrived too late to catch the tour for the day but rented bikes and went out exploring. Ben gave us a map and instructions to find the pub with cold beer and a couple other places. We got hopelessly lost and stuck in a downpour, and I wasn’t super-comfortable with offroad cycling on the muddy, rutted roads, but looking back I laugh about that day, it was definitely an adventure! We also got to go on a jeep ride with Ben and have coffee with the man who discovered Paradise Cave- very cool! The next two days we did the Phong Nha cave tour and National Park tour. The latter especially is highly recommended. The farmstay was a great place to meet other travelers and swap stories, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was decent- a few dishes, like the pho ga, was excellent, others were just ok. They are upfront about the prices and for the most part I found them reasonable- with the exception of the bicycle rental perhaps, which was much higher than anywhere else we stayed (and it wasn’t like the bikes were that great). The staff booked train tickets for us to our next destination.
For an area that's still a bit off the beaten path (but maybe not for long) this place is very well set up for travellers- book early to be sure there is space.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- We, Ben and Bich, had an epiphany to start a tourism business in the middle of nowhere and ourfamily and the rest of the community thought we were mad. Now half of them think it was their idea. Our Mission statement was to create what we'd want if we were on holiday, in this then remote and still beautiful region of northern central Vietnam. Comfortable beds, nice views, a swimming pool, full bar, tasty food and top quality tours/activities. Winning formula, so we thought! We get a lot of customers looking for something different to a backpacker hostel scene, but with a fun atmosphere. Not a Vietnamese hotel atmosphere either. Something unique. Something for everybody. Immerse yourself in the magic of remote rural Vietnam, between the coast and the mountains, in the northern Central region just now being discovered by mainstream tourism. Take yourself on a trip into a photographer's paradise. Our French Colonial style accommodation, set in the idyllic surroundings of rice paddy fields on the edge of the famous Phong Nha-Ke Bang World Heritage National Park just off the Ho Chi Minh Trail, is the ideal base for wild adventures that you have only dreamed about... or simply take time to experience the local village life or chill by the pool. There are many tour and do it yourself options to keep you busy for a few days. Send us an email for more information. ... more less
