Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 21, 2011

Our family landed at the airport at 4pm and we were met at the exit by staff who led us onto the speed boat. Slightly after 5pm we were already at the island but the boat made a prior stop at Veli to drop off guests there. The excellent service began Immediately when we were welcomed onto Dhigu, and it never stopped! All the staff from the Bangladeshi man carting around the "Beach Guru" coconut trolley to our room attendant (Waheed) to the restaurant managers to the resort manager were very friendly and helpful. We stayed at the over water villa number 91 which is the first one on the right of the walkway. I found it very convenient and close also because we have 2 kids ages 8 and 7. Everything about the room was great except for the slightly loud air conditioning and the over-romantic atmosphere which meant not enough reading lights! Having said that the whole island and the restaurants are very dark at night. Speaking of restaurants, during our 4 night stay we tried almost every restaurant including the Italian (twice), the seafood grill, the Thai, the Japanese fusion place called "Geckos" and of course the usual place for breakfast. Every restaurant was tasty, which to be honest surprised. Of course it's not cheap but that is to be expected. The wide ranging choices of restaurants on Veli and Dhigu (5 minutes boat ride from each other) I think is pretty important especially if you're planning to stay several nights. By the way there were numerous "little things" which we appreciated such as gifts for our kids on arrival as well as flower decorations on our bed on our final night. Also the island is fumigated or something so I wasn't bitten once during the entire trip. Overall, it's not easy to choose a hotel in the Maldives since there are so many but I would recommend this place.

We have stayed at 4 other 5-star resorts in the Maldives and out of all of them, Anantara Dhigu was the one I was most apprehensive about having read a few non-glowing reviews on Trip Advisor. I was so thrilled when Anantara Dhigu exceeded my expectations and turned out to be our 2nd favorite resort in the Maldives.

First of all, I want to clear up this misconception about Anantara Dhigu not having good snorkelling/a poor house reef. We actually had great snorkeling! The trick is that you get a kayak (guests have free use of sports equipment for 2 hours per day EVERY day) and you kayak out to the BBQ island (past the Sunrise Overwater Suites), dock the kayak on the beach there and then snorkel off the back of that small island. It is really neat because (as the man who works at the small bar/outpost on that island will tell you) there are actually different species of sea life on either side of the island so it is really like 2 different snorkeling experiences. We saw all types and a plethora of gorgeous fish, coral, eels, sharks, rays, sea cucumbers....it was excellent!

We stayed in a Sunset Overwater Suite and could't have been happier. The room was modern, large, had a great sound system, many English TV choices, a huge mini-bar and gift-shop type set up, a table with checkers and backgammon, luxurious soaking tub with your choice of either bath salts or bubble bath, wonderful amenities and basically an unlimited supply of bottled water. This was so nice! Not only did was have about 6-8 bottles of water in our room at a time that were constantly replenished but they were actual sealed bottles of water (not the glass jugs Maldives hotels normally refill for you). This was a nice surprise!

We thought it was worth it paying the little extra money for the Sunset versus Sunrise villa because the Sunset offered more privacy (in addition to the romantic view of the sunsets). On the Sunrise side you have kayakers constantly going by en route to the BBQ/Snorkeling island since the Water Sport center is based on that side. You also have a view of the staff island which wouldn't bother us but might some people. On the Sunset side was also what we nicknamed "the ray trail" as we saw numerous rays swim by in the evening.

Another recommendation would be to look at the hotel map I uploaded as a photo and have an idea of the room you want and request it upon check in. We wanted to be farther out the jetty (more private) but when we initially checked in they had us assigned to a room closer to the shore. We asked nicely for one farther out and they told us that if we didn't mind waiting to check in for 4 hours that we could have our desired room. We gladly said okay and the 4 hours flew by as the Aqua bar has some of the most delicious drinks and tasty food!

Another tip would be to go Half Board. We were glad we did so since it gave us flexibility for lunch (Most days we at at the Aqua Bar but you can also go to Anantara Veli). With Half Board you can eat at the main buffet on Dhigu and 73 degrees at Veli which has live/fresh seafood cooked to order in addition to a small buffet. Also with HB you get a 30% or 40% discount if you eat your dinner at one of the pay restaurants. Every restaurant we ate at exceeded expectations (except we thought the buffet at Dhigu was nicer with more variety than 73 degrees. Veli is SUPER EASY to get to as they have a boat go back and forth literally every 5 minutes and the boat ride is less than 5 minutes.

Another tip is that if you go out on the arrival jetty (where the speed boat drops you off) in the dusk/evening hours you can see rays, fish and tons of sharks swimming around which is neat to watch.

We would also recommend taking advantage of the spa since it is over water with lovely treatments.

Overall we had some of the best service and most delicious food out of all of our trips to the Maldives. We highly recommend Anantara Dhigu and hope to return here in the near future!

Room Tip: I uploaded a map of the resort. Check it out and ask at check in for the room you want. They were ve...

We went there for 4 days, 3 nights. The views from all over the island are absolutely spectacular. This is supposed to have been the rainy season (July), we however didn't see one drop of rain, which was good for us!

The only negative thing I can say about the resort is that on more than one occasion we waited extremely long for our meals to be served. (Drinks are very expensive, but I believe it is the same all over the Maldives.)

The staff are however well trained and very friendly.

The GM (a lady from the Netherlands) is phenomenal and seems to be everywhere at all times of the day and night overseeing the smooth operation of her resorts. (Very impressive)

The resort is very nice with marvelous accomodations, good restaurants, very friendly and service orientated staff and last but not least a very nice and relaxing ambiance. Most of all because of the very professional and nice staff who clearly like their work!! I can strongly recommend this very nice resort

Smooth transfer from the airport to the island, cold water and towels were distributed during the trip. Once we reached the property, we were welcomed by the hotel staff at the jetty - management, front office, housekeeping - I could say anyone who's free was there to give us a warm welcome.
The usual during check-in, cold drinks are served while filling out the forms and briefing about what the property has to offer.
No buggy from reception to our villa, it was a short walk though, just felt sorry for Prashrit, the guy who checked us in, who had to carry some of our stuff. The bigger luggage were delivered later, in a buggy of course.

We hit the beach once we got settled and it was the most beautiful I've ever seen!!! (this is coming from a person who hails from an archipelago and lives in a white sand beach city!) Though Maldives sand is not that powdery, more like broken corals and shells, but the scenery was breathtaking!!!

Even at night we enjoyed the beach by taking evening walks barefoot.

One good thing about Anantara is that they have a neighboring island property, Veli, and transfer is provided free every five minutes. So you get to enjoy the facilities of the other island too. Any expenses could be charged to your room at Dhigu, hassle-free!

Staff were very pleasant and personal without being intrusive, and efficient. They had one slip though - our wakeup call came 30 minutes later than requested, we missed our planned sunrise walk. The front office manager was quick to apologize though, even if we did not complain.

Unbelievable how the 'top' guys assist you in carrying your luggage without reservations! Even in the presence of a bellhop! Never in any property, city hotels or resorts, have we seen such gesture!

The villas were situated in a manner that they are not so far between yet private, as each is separated with growths of bushes and trees.

Diving and snorkeling is also good, but we have seen much better before in a different island resort. Marine life is not as diverse and abundant here.

The only thing we did not enjoy much is the food, it was not bad but we were expecting a more than not bad culinary experience. Would have made a difference if we tried the Thai resto which some of the guests were raving about, but our visit was too short to try all food outlets in the island.

Leaving the resort was a heartbreaker, especially when the hotel staff (again) saw us off as we boarded the boat taking us to Male.
