Vadnagar is a small fortified town located about 110 kms from Ahmedabad. There are two beautiful Torans or arches just North of the walled town. These torans are around 40 feet tall and built of red and yellow stand stone. Both the torans have beautiful carvings of dancing girls, series of animals like elephants, battle and hunting scenes. It is believed that these were erected to commemorate victory in a war. Vadnagar is an ancient city has many attractions worth seeing. If you are planning to visit Gujarat it is worth planning a trip including Vadnagar, Motera Sun Temple and Patan and other attractions all of which were built during the Solanki dynasty from 10th to13th century.

On 10th March , 2013 we reached Vadnagar 110 km from Ahmedabad , to view Kirti Toran of 10th Century , 13 m high Uttung Toran of red and yellow sandstone standing on the very wide rectangular 15 steps high edifice of Rewah . All the parts of the Toran were constructed using the principles employed in the temple design .

The decorative veneer and mouldings of the socle and collumns have been executed with great care . The socle has a simple design of lozenges , cyma , arris , followed by a succession of bands bearing a seriesof gorgons , elephants , humans and a kumbhi ( high basal moulding with curved shoulder ) with elaborate carvings on it .

Above this is a torus , Then a drip projection and a gorgon band . Above this there is a standing human figure on both the collumns . The attic collumns above are encircled by brackets as Vyalas on the inner face and maidens on the other three faces . Above this is built an ornamental cusped arch , at the center of which is sitting Shiv flanked by Parvati and Ganesh in eparate vaults .

This is an Illika Torana style popularised by Solanki kings while constructing the victory arches .

Vadnagar is about 4500 years old city and is also famous for its 17th Century old hatakeshwar temple .
