Our ground floor room was spacious, with a comfortable sofa and king bed. It was like a suite motel’s room. It had a refrigerator (no freezer), microwave, coffee maker with packets, a desk with a good swivel chair, ironing board and iron flat screen TV, and high speed internet connection. There was no hair dryer or Kleenex dispenser. Decent lighting, cleanliness, and tasteful decorations added to the room’s appeal. Guests had access to a coin operated Laundromat. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this motel, off the beaten path, but great for birders, fishermen, and other lovers of the outdoors. All rooms were nonsmoking. We were told that the floor above us in this two story motel was made of concrete so we would not hear people walking.
We were glad we bought food to take to Cameron at a supermarket in Lafayette for our four night’s stay. This “mom and pop” motel does not provide a continental breakfast. Gigi’s Café is close to the motel, but we were not impressed with their menu items and did not eat there. (We did ask about their hours and were told M-F. 8-7, Sat. 8-5, closed on Sunday). There were two places to buy groceries in Cameron, both with limited selections. A small grocery store with gas station near the ferry landing had the basic camping sort of canned food etc., as well as pizzas they microwave. It was open 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. The Family Dollar store had a somewhat more extensive food selection, but it was certainly not a supermarket.
Cameron is close to the water, but mosquitoes were not much of a problem while we were there. To avoid getting mosquitoes etc. in our room we would come in at night with the lights off and turn them on only after we were inside. Hurricanes can be a problem, and Cameron was still recovering from past hurricane damage. At one time Cameron had more lodging facilities, but not as of April 2013.
We did not have to pay in advance for our $80 per night room. A credit card held the room, with a 48 hour cancellation policy in effect. We were glad we reserved a month ahead. We were told they were rapidly filling up with a group for the following weekend (Apr. 27-28).
