“An outstanding glimpse at Louisiana”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

The relatively new state museum in Baton Rouge ranks among the best of its kind in the nation. Exhibits are organized by theme rather than chronologically and cover a myriad of topics, ranging from the 1815 Battle of New Orleans to Mardi Gras. There is a nice mixture of artifacts, label copy, and participatory exhibits. Highly recommended!

“Great free museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

It's a great start to learn more about Louisiana, its history, culture and people. And best part of it - it's free!

“The Best Introduction to Louisiana Culture & History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

I come here several times a year with international visitors (relatives visiting from Europe, international LSU students from all continents), as this gives them such a wonderful introduction to the very special history and culture of our unique state: they love it, and the discovery of other places in South Louisiana makes so much more sense then. The visitor interacts and becomes part of life along the mighty Mississippi, colonial and American Louisiana, civil war, meets with Huey Long and engages in culture, folklore and economy when continuing the visit upstairs. One of the best museums of its kind: you would expect a museum of this quality to be crowded at all times. This is not the case. The LSM is awaiting your visit, you will not regret! Enjoy!

“An excellent museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

If there was a higher rating on this website, I would give it to this museum. And would you believe it, the museum is free to visit. There are 2 floors to this museum. The first floor contains exhibits which relate to both Baton Rouge and Louisiana history. There is a submarine which dates from the Civil War and they're not sure of its origin. The place also contains a shrimp boat. Add a cotton gin and a sugar cane harvester to this. There are exhibits relating to the oil industry. This floor covers Black history dating back from the days of slavery to the Civil Rights movement after WWII. Cajun history is also covered. The Civil War is included. There's a section devoted to the great Jazz musician Louis Armstrong. The second floor contains exhibits relating to the music industry and Mardi Gras. The Mardi Gras displays are ornate and colorful. So are the other displays. They cover country, blues, cajun, and other types of music. You'll spend several hours browsing through this great museum.

“Well worth seeing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Appreciated the history of the state, especially Gov. Huey Long. The relationship between Long and FDR was new information for me.
