In the shadow of the current state capitol building, this large museum is a little know gem. It is free and comfortable and a real introduction to the history, cultural and people of Louisiana. You can visit briefly and hit the high spots or immerse yourself in the exhibits (including an impressive recorded array of musical styles and performers) for a day. Each region of the state is represented by an independent exhibit set and there are some large exhibits, like an entire shrimp boat, that makes one wonder how they got it into the building. I have not been there when it was crowded. It is a pity that there are no tours run by informative guides, but maybe that can happen with increased visitor volume.
