“Not to miss”

I love the beauty of the Old State Capitol building, the friendliness of the docents and the special displays with the voice and images of Huey P. Long. The museum has done a good job of portraying old Louisiana

“Absolutely beautiful artwork, architecture and history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013

Absolutely beautiful artwork and architecture and so much history. Went with my cousin, his wife and their two children. So much more interesting to kids seeing history then learning from a text book.

“Lovely and great fun for kids”

I grew up in BR so I know the Old capitol like the back of my hand. I played on the grounds, still play on the cannon and well, just go!

“Forget what Mark Twain said....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2012

The castellate Old State Capitol is a gem both historically and architecturally. I would say just seeing the central hall and staircase and the two upstairs main chambers would justify a visit, but the historical displays are an additional attraction. The building had been damaged by fire during the Civil War and Mark Twain wrote: “It is pathetic enough, that a whitewashed castle, with turrets and things…pretending to be what they are not– should ever have been built in this otherwise honorable place” and he also made a disparaging remark suggesting the building should have been torn down to finish what merciful fire had started. I find it hard to believe anyone standing in the main central hall and looking up to the stained glass dome in the Old State Capitol would agree with Mark Twain!

“Do this if you have an hour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2012

While I would not make this a must see, if you have an hour, the stain glass dome and circular stairwell are beautiful. The exhibits are interesting and you can get an audio tour by leaving your ID at the desk. Interesting tour and history.
