The scenery is beautiful. Best time to see it is when it is a little damp and overcast because the mist comes out of the trees.

For 16 years now, I have been hiking this FREE attraction in eastern KY. Once, about ten years ago, I even owned two rental cabins there and knew quite a few of the locals. I have been told by several rock climbers from New Zealand and Great Britain that it was in the top two places in the world for rock climbing. At any rate, it must have been very special for them to travel to Slade, KY to pursue their sport. I believe the area is only about 2700 acres but there are many trails to hike and many cliffs to be aware of. About 3-5 miles away, there is Natural Bridge State Park which is scenic and is about TEN TIMES as large as Red River Gorge. There is a lodge with a dining room at Natural Bridge. BUT YOU HVE TO BE SURE AND EAT PIZZA AT MIGUEL'S when you are in the area. Also, there is a Via Ferrata in the area at Torrent Falls, KY. Back around 2002 when it opened, it was the only one in the US, although Europe had 200-300 of them. This one consists of a horseshoe-shaped cliff with a tiny waterfall about 120 feet high. If you are physically up to the challenge, it is something special! They used to charge about $28 for adults back in 2002. This included a harness and climbing instructions. You would need to contact them for current pricing.

I took my family here just to get out of the house and was surprised by how many trails is here. If you like nature and hiking then this place is for you. We aren't big on hiking but my kids really enjoyed it. I think that they should fix the pot holes in some of the gravel roads but besides that this place is awesome.
