“Nice cabin, but not built for chilly weather”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

A group of us wanted to climb at Torrent Falls over Thanksgiving, so we decided to rent a cabin through Red River Outdoors. We reserved the Windy Corner cabin (suitable for 6, but we added a 7th person). The cabin included a full bathroom, a bedroom with a queen bed, 2 queen beds in the loft, and the couch was a futon (for the 7th person). The kitchen included a toaster, coffee pot, small electric stove, fridge, and all the utensils and other items we needed.

There were a couple of downfalls to the cabin:
*It wasn't very clean - the ceiling fan probably had about 2 inches or more of dust caked on the blades. Dust was everywhere. Lots of dirt and crumbs and nastiness under the futon.
*Neither of the portable fans worked
*Cabin was extremely chilly! It was less than 30 degrees outside when we arrived. The cabin is equipped with a small gas heater and a space heater. We had both running and even after 12 hours, it was still barely hitting 48-50 degrees in the cabin.

Pros:
*Amy is awesome and works with you in every way. When we complained about the cold cabin, she brought us another space heater, which definitely helped.
*Climbing was only 5 minutes away
*Plenty of hot water for showers and doing dishes

Red River Outdoors is under new ownership. We take great pride in making sure that the cabins are thoroughly cleaned. The dust and debris situation is no longer an issue. Both portable floor fans and air conditioner work.

Due to the nature of the cabin, it is challenging to heat it when it gets cold outside (below 30). The cabins are seasonal and not properly insulated for below freezing temps.

“Great Hiking and scenery.”

Make sure to buy a trail guide book. The views are spectacular but some of the trail can be quite challenging.

“The water level was low, so not that great”

The company was great and they did a good job, but it was not really the adventure we had hoped for! Water was too low,

Red River Outdoors is under new ownership.

We stop renting the boats out when the water level gets low. It is not an enjoyable trip when you have to drag the boat half of the time. Also, the dragging causes damage to the boats. When the Red River is to low for a float, we do rent out boats and car top carriers so you can go and enjoy Mill Creek Lake and the Kentucky River and create your own adventure.

“Torrent Fall Climbing Adventure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2012

This adventure made the memory for our vacation. We just arrived home from Slade, Kentucky which is only six hours from St. Louis and one hour south of Lexington. We have been getting away with our three teenagers over Thanksgiving weekend for the last few years.

We have bouldered before, but never had gear on except for an indoor climbing wall. After a short lesson,My husband and myself finished the first three sections of the wall. We are not in shape. It was not hard, but it was exciting being that high up and "learning the ropes". My three kids finished the next two sections which required more upper body strength. They loved it. If we had done this the first day, I think we would have returned to try a guided trip and clinic on climbing. 35.00 was worth it.
I recommend this for an outdoor kind of family who like to expose their kids to all things. They must be at least ten years old and follow directions well. We stayed at a cabin called Sunset Falls which had a great view.
