Definitely not a managed or packaged destination, the Lower Town Arts District is the real deal! Wandering from studio to studio, you are going to find a huge variation from painters to ceramics, jewelers to print makers... and a great coffeehouse to!

Start at the Coffeehouse (etcetera) or at the Texaco Station for a district map and then stay on foot. 7th street has the largest concentration of folks who are open often, but with the map, feel free to call people up and tell them you are on their front porch and would they open up to show you their art?

You'll likely be greeted by someone covered with clay or paint and you'll get a peek at the real life of an Artist at work.

The 2013 festival was the best yet! The variety of musicians and talent of the bands was superb! We were there 2 nights and I went to yoga on the lawn on Saturday morning. The artist's booths held lots of beautifully crafted items. . . there was good food available and lots of beverages! Will be back next year!

Having recently been named a Kentucky Cultural Arts District, this event held annually in Paducah, was even greater than usual. The artisans were great, the food offered by local specialty restaurants was fantastic and the music varied and wonderful. This is a 3 day event held every year in May and the weather cooperated this year with partly cloudy weather in the 80's. No matter what type of music you like, the 2 stages had jazz, blues, orchestra or more modern bands playing all the time. There is some seating, but you might want to bring a lawn chair if you plan to sit under a tree and be a people watcher for the day. Because it is in a residental area, parking is not simple, but well worth the walk. Local galleries in the area are open and about 70 artisans are set up along the streets. In a good year this event brings thousands and is a worthwhile trip.
If you come a few weeks earlier, you will catch the lit-up Dogwood Trail and the International Quilt Show also held in Paducah. Go several blocks to the river front and see the river walk with it's beautiful murals telling the history of the city and stop in the spectacular quilt museum. There are B&Bs along the riverfront or you can leave the historic downtown area and have your choice of all the well known top-notch hotels at a reasonable cost. I highly recommend Paducah Kentucky.

The dogwoods had just begun to blossom so the opportunities for photography were plentiful. Lots of retail and restaurant choices with a great deal of free parking nearby.
