This is a very old building that reeks of stale beer and cigarette smoke. To check in, you see the bartender in a very seedy bar downstairs. No forms are filled out for a room, which makes one wonder if it is a legitimate hotel. The bathroom was covered in mold and the water ran brown at first. There is no phone and no TV and the key did not lock the room door. Forget about wireless. At night, when the bar downstairs closes, they lock the front and back door -- with a deadbolt, which is an obvious and serious safety hazard, especially when there is no phone and no emergency number. Illuminated exit signs are nowhere to be found. It is hard to imagine how this property passes any sort of inspection, if in fact, it has.

This family owned for six generations Inn sits above a bar that is a regular of the locals. I had the honor of meeting the owner and learned about the bar, the fire in 1913 and how it had been restored. The bar is an amazing piece of woodwork. I was welcomed like family. This is a little gem of a place. New Haven sits back off of I-65 about 15 miles, but it is worth the drive into the small town. If you like trains, you are in luck as the historic train station is just outside the inn. I stayed in room 6, the largest of the rooms, on the corner directly above the bar. I believe they serve breakfast on the weekends. My room had a shower, but it appears some rooms might share a shower. Glorious simple antiques. It could benefit from more work (my room had a patch that needed to be repainted), but the hospitality is genuine and worth it's weight. The bar food is just that, simple burgers and fries. The fish sandwich looked wonderful. I would imagine the weekends would be busy with locals, so you should be prepared to join in. If you want a drive off the beaten path, take 31E and you will run into the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and wonderful old barns with "See Rock City" signs. This place is not for everyone, but if you appreciate simple, southern charm, you will never want to leave.

Room Tip: Room Number 6.

The Sherwood Inn is a very simple 1930's style hotel. Located yards away from the KY Railway Museum it is very convenient for Steam Engine or Diesel Locomotive nuts like me. The rooms are very simple as was the style. The hotel only has 5 rooms and is located above a saloon style tavern with a great atmosphere. The locals are very hospitable and enjoy a good beer. If you looking for pampering or all that sissy stuff this is not the place for you! If you want a different experience and love real live steam engines, book a cab ride at the KY Railway Museum and spend the night at the Sherwood Inn! Fall is the best time!

  • Liked — Old Style 1930's very simple. Proximity to Ky Railway Museum
  • Disliked — Proximity to KY Railway Museum, Bar atmosphere
