The Port Huon Cottages
Reviewed February 9, 2011

We were lucky enough to stay 3 nights in the Port Huon Cottages. When we arrived we were greeted by our hosts with two lovely smiles and a large breakfast hamper. In addition they treated us with champagne and chockies, we were immediately won over.
Our room was amazing, every need well catered for. Our cottage had a balcony over looking the water and there was a BBQ with table and chairs to enjoy. The cottages are situated centrally to many attractions which also really appealed to us. We also loved the fact that there was an internet cafe and pub just a stones throw away (and also the town of Geeveston was a 5min drive so you could easily purchase supplies)
There was a pier so we were able to catch a Tassie Cod one evening for dinner, what a treat! Over all we would highly rate our stay here and definately plan a return visit :)

We were there for 3 nights our stay was so disappointing. Firstly you are unable to park the car next to the cottage because the property is built on a hill side, so we had to walk down the hill with our luggage.
The 2 bed apartment is only set up for 2 people, with 2 single chairs, small TV bar fridge, an oven that either doesn’t cook or burns.
The kitchen had very little as far as utensils, we were given a chux cloth that had been used & recycled & the washing up liquid was watered down that much there was only enough in the bottle to do 2 sink loads of dishes.
The hot water runs out after 2 showers. The bed is as hard as a rock
They offer a laundry service at $10 per load which i thought was expensive.
there is no broom or dust pan, so if you drop crumbs ther's no way to get them up.
Don’t expect the towels to be changed & the milk had a use by date the day before we left.

During the day the maid comes in & opens the window & puts the fan on because the cottage has a “ventilation problem” I tried to explain that with the windows open anyone could brake in & have access to our valuables ( not sure if she cared too much). This could explain the mouldy curtains though.
If you book in advance also be aware that you will be paying more than if you just show up.

I also fell over on the decking outside the cabin because of the ice, when we spoke to another party who were staying they said they had a note in their cabin to worn them about the ice. We never!!!

The only good thing about the accomedation is the view of the lake.

We stopped here for an overnight visit. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the self-contained cottage was modern and clean. Not so good was the kitchen/cooking facilities. There was a full oven and hotplates, but no oven dishes so couldn't cook in that, and there was a microwave but no microwave dishes to cook in either, and barest minimum of cooking utensils. In other words, I could only cook in a saucepan which wasn't what I had planned for the night! Not the best location being right on a busy road, and no security screens on the windows if you wanted to open them up at night.

After an awful night sleep in Hobart we arrived at Port Huon Cottages. I have previously driven past the cottages on other trips to Tasmania, but never stayed down the Huon Valley. This time I finally tried them out and from now on will alway make the effort to have at least one night in the Huon Valley. Fantastic accomodation. We got the stanby rate of $125 for the 2 bedroom cottage which was all that was available. 2 queensize beds, heating, kitchen, lounge, bathroom and deck. From one bed I could see the river. All beautifully maintained and other than the occassional truck during the night very peaceful. We dined at the pub just up the road and had a great meal and good service. This is a beautiful part of Tasmania.

After all the horrible motels we came to this place. At Port Huon all the cottages are situated in a quite close distance from each other, but they still offer you privacy and nice views to a lake and a mountain. It was like a safe haven.
Unfortunately, we only stayed there for one night... I would have wanted to stay longer.
The room had a kitchen and a separate bedroom. Everything was near new and there was really friendly reception when we arrived. The receptionist even carried our luggage to our cottage!
If you want to have a more remote place, then it's better to go elsewhere - but this was good for us. -It's almost the same as renting a cottage in a caravan park without the nuisance of people with caravans or campervans... ;o)
I really warmly recommend this place.

These comfortable self contained cottages opened in October 2006 so still have that new feel about them. Whilst they are situated on the high side of the main road to Geeveston, any traffic noise isn't a problem. All cottages have lovely water views of the Huon River particularly in the mornings, very peaceful.

We stayed 2 nights in the 1 bedroom Peter Bennett cottage, each of them are named in honour of locals, some are 2 b/room and with a spa. There are full sized stoves and either an electric or gas BBQ on the balcony for self catering. We enjoyed a simple BBQ and glass on the balcony whilst the sun was setting - delightful. Nearby Geeveston has 2 small supermarkets, a bakery and butcher otherwise obtain your supplies at the larger business centre of Huonville 30 mins before Port Huon. If you don't want to self cater, there is the Kermandie Hotel and a cafe closeby.

Standby rates available A$99 - 130 and breakfast provisions can be arranged, see website www.porthuoncottages.com

Port Huon Cottages are located midway in the Huon Valley on the Huon Trail Touring route and makes for a very convenient base being 5 mins away from Geeveston and the Forest & Heritage Centre (pre-buy tickets to the Tahune Air Walk - fantastic experience), Dover, Hastings Caves & Thermal Springs or Cockle Creek - as far south as it is possilbe to drive in Australia but be aware it is unsealed road from Lune River. This doesn't seem to bother the locals though as it seemed very popular for weekend campers but it may be against your agreement with the hire car company!.

A visit to the Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin is also worthwhile. Don't forget to buy some apples a the numerous stalls along the way near Huonville.
