We got to the ticket booth and waited for out tour guide he came on a bus - on our way to the site he stopped and pointed out more sites . Once we got to the area we had to walk about a mile to the actual baptism site the water had dried up. Then we were taken to another part of the Jordan river where the river still flowed and we got to touch the water, right across from us we could see the people in West Bank Palestinine doing the same reaching hands in the water also people gettig baptised- worth a visit if ur ever in Jordan - also the deadsea is a 2 mile drive away!!

The Baptism site - its fun to talk with other pilgrims across the water ... Renew your baptism vows .. And generally enjoy the cool waters of the jordan river

This site might be inspiring for very committed Christians, who just want to be where it happened. But even they might find it depressing. We felt our mental images had been shattered and we wished we had not gone.
The site is in a military zone; expect to see lots of barbed wire and men with guns.
Access is allowed only in groups with a guide, who is actually a ‘minder’. Ours was rude and merely barked instructions on when to move on and what number to enter into the (compulsory) electronic audio-guides.
I had not expected many physical remains from 2,000 years ago, but I did not expect the actual baptism site to have green slimy water at the bottom of a hole that had clearly been recently re- excavated, even though the River Jordan is now a trickle compared to what it once was, and it’s moved so it’s now 100 metres away.
We did however see several more recent structures. Some very recent; a rather grubby, empty marble tank built since the Pope’s visit to facilitate mass baptisms, and a church built in 2002 that looked very nice (no expense spared?) – but the door was locked. Also a soft drinks stall where we had to wait 10 minutes for the (compulsory) shuttle bus to take us back to the new shopping arcade at the ticket office. I complained to our ‘guide’ that the bus should have been waiting for us at the end of the tour. He responded, not with an apology, but with a snarl.
On the other side of the River Jordan there was a religious ceremony being conducted; a baptism, presumably. It looked quite moving, despite the dirty brown water. But on the Jordanian side there was little evidence of goodwill being shown to all men.
