Barren River Lake State Resort Park
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Barren River Lake is a fine example of the excellent Kentucky State Parks system. It is well-developed, well-maintained, and offers plenty to do, especially if you like water activities. What we like most is the peaceful family atmosphere unlike many vacation destinations. Highlights include the site of the Scottish Highland Games which are usually in early June; a nice hilly 18 hole golf course with a modest clubhouse, a 2.5 mile paved bike trail through the woods with moderate elevation changes (watch out for bumps and hairpin turns), plus the expected beach and marina. The lodge looks nice, but dated. The park has about 20 large modern cabins ("villas") for rent as well.

We stayed at the campground which is excellent with spacious paved sites and plenty of tree cover. People often wonder why I criticize dense commercial campgrounds. I will refer them to Barren River Lake campground for a great example of spaciousness. Negatively, most sites have significant grades so bring extra blocks to level a camper.
We saw one long camper with about 2 feet of blocks stacked under the tongue! The bath houses were reasonably modern and clean. Our site had only 20 and 30 amp service. Check ahead if you need 50 amp service. Every site had a picnic table and fire pit. A few of the perimeter sites had wooden decks. Some campers set their tents up there for a flat dry surface. There is a boat ramp at the back of the campground. Campers do not have access to the Lodge pool, but can take advantage the beach and other State Park amenities. The road layout is a bit strange with one-way roads forcing extra turns, some of which are rather tight for a larger RV or trailer.

Bowling Green and Mammoth Caves are less than an hour away, making Barren River Lake State Park a great base of operations for a regional vacation.

One final note - Barren River Lake is much larger than the State park with multiple boat ramps and marinas administered by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The also operate 3 separate campgrounds that appeared very nice. We may try one of them if our travels bring us back to Southern Kentucky.

Room Tip: Camp site on the perimeter

After doing some research about the many resorts located within the Kentucky State Parks we chose this one. It offers a golf course, a gorgeous lake, pool if needed (with kiddie option), lodge & cabins, and more. Wifi is only available in the lodge and lodge rooms not the cabins. However, for our family the cabin had the perfect amount of space. We used the dining room to play card games & the kitchen to make s'mores. It is rather homely and could use some updating (bathroom countertop was peeling up) but overall was quite clean. The balcony had no view but the sounds of nature was amazing. And it was all only a short walk to the main lodge house. I would recommend driving down to the lake as we went for a sunset swim and walking back at night would have been difficult. Overall the lodge, restaurant, lake, and cabins combined with a helpful & witty staff made for an amazing stay.

Room Tip: If you need wifi stay in the lodge but if you need privacy (and/or) space stay in a cabin.

As always the lake is beautiful and quiet. park is just far enough from town (Glasgow) so you can enjoy the night sky. Since the park is 45 years old some required maintenance was going out but did not hamper your enjoyment of the area. What I call a plus is the great buffet that they have for all meals. For families the pool is just large enough and kept in great shape. .

Room Tip: Ask for lake view

We used the Barren River Lake State Park Resort as a staging place for a 90th birthday party with eighteen people converging from the west coast as well as Georgia. We had the party in the lodge (reserving a room), and had many meals over three days in the buffet.

The restaurant service was excellent ; we felt like family by the end of our stay. The food
The food was excellent as every menu item ordered came tasty and prepared as ordered. We found the buffet to have a nice selection of "southern food" which was a treat for west coasters.

The pool was well used by our group, and the golf course was found to be beautiful along with being a fun/quality course. With a longer stay with appropriate weather we would have rented a boat to explore the river and perhaps a jet ski to jet around on.

We did several off site activities including bicycle rides. This is an amazing place to ride bikes, riding in the two lane roads seem safe, perhaps because locals are accustomed to sharing the road with Amish hose and buggy travelers. Also the roadside scenery is beautiful with crops growing, bright green grass, rolling hills, and more. The rides we took were on rolling hills, but were not difficult to climb.

Another side trip was to Mammoth Cave NationalPark. Without reservations we were limited to the "self guided tour". This is definitely worth the drive and time.

In Glasgow, (15 minute drive) We stumbled into the best local museum that we have aver seen; the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center. This museum is located in an old factory and is filled with historic, cultural, scientific, and educational displays, covering wildlife of the area, historic replicas of various business types over the past hundred years. The also have military weapons dating back to the Revolutionary War to current times. Even with the friendly docents, this is a place that you can get lost in history.

The Barren State Resort was a perfect spot to us to stay and enjoy the best that Kentucky has to offer.

The Barren River Lake State Resort offers a lot to singles, couples and families that want to enjoy a great get-a-way place. The lake is beautiful and the surrounding grounds, excellent. The Louie Nunn Lodge needs some updating but overall it is a delightful place to staff.

The staff is very polite and helpful both at the front desk and the restaurant. The lake itself is something to see (close to 10,000 acres I think.)

Tons of stuff to do from boating to riding horses, fishing, picnicking, walking trails, golf and swimming. There is even a fitness center.

The hotel is pet friendly however there is a non-refundable fee of either 3\$30 or $50 depending on the location of your room. Also no fridge or microwave in the room.

Try the resort, I have no doubt you will like it.

Spent a fabulous week at Barren River Kentucky State resort park. Had a large villa for our accommodations, that was located in a beautiful wooded section of the park. Villa was equipped with full kitchen, screened in sun room, living room & outdoor porch.
Lake marina, resort lodge with pool & activities were minutes away.
Rented a pontoon boat for several days at the State dock (see separate review of marina facilities).
Special insight: if you really, really want to have a GREAT vacation in Kentucky then take your time & simply SLOW DOWN. Treat everyone with respect & manners, I guarantee you an awesome return for your efforts⛵️
