“Beautiful historic hotel”
Reviewed June 3, 2012

My husband and I were in town for a wedding, and the reception was downstairs in the Rathskeller. Our room was reasonably priced as part of the wedding package arranged by the family of the bride.
Our king room was beautifully appointed. Of course, the bathroom was small and a bit awkward with a large step up to get into it--not unusual for a hotel built in the nineteenth century! The shower was great, though, and there was plenty of light.
We ate a quick lunch (tasty $5.00 hamburgers) in the Seelbach's bar after checking in. The next morning we enjoyed a delicious Sunday brunch with friends in the Oak Room. Service was excellent, and the buffet was as pretty as a photo from Bon Appetit magazine.
Every employee we came in contact with, from the hotel manager to the bell captain, was very friendly and anxious to please us.
If you stay here, just be aware of the $25 parking fee. Be sure to allow plenty of time for the valet to retrieve your car. When all the cars from the wedding showed up at the hotel simultaneously, there was a backup of vehicles waiting for valet parking that stretched two blocks behind us!

We had a great stay at the Seelbach in Louisville. The staff was very friendly from the valet and bell staff as we arrived, to our check -in at the front desk. The room was clean, and the housekeping staff even checked with us to see if we needed anything more, after we checked in. Our experince at the "old Bar" for a late afternoon snack and cocktails was great. Our Bartendar was very friendly and told us things about Louisville and the hotel that were of interest. The selections of Bourbons is great and it is on the "bourbon trail expeince" in Louisville. Dinner in the famous Oak Room was nothing less then one of the best dining experinces we have ever had. It lived up to it's 5 Diamond rating. The service, and food were excellent. Troy our waiter was great with his wine pairings, and telling us of some of the history of the restaurant and the hotel. I highly recommend having special dinning there or special event. We had a great stay at the Seelback and we will be back.

This past weekend I spent a night in the presidential suite (room 930). Our experience at the Seelbach was superb. The Seelbach has one of the most gorgeous lobbies I have seen. The complimentary shuttle picked us up at the airport right on time. The staff was friendly and knowledgable of the hotel's history. The Concierge Lounge/Bar was excellent as it offered premium beers, wines, and liquor for $2. The nightly hors d'oeuvres were very tasty. Drinks and food were quickly restocked by the attendent. The room was very nice and has a large livingroom. The bathrooms in the suite are small and simple however this is expected since the hotel was built in 1905. My only suggestion would be for the hotel to consider upgrading the artwork in the room, possibly with historic paintings or historic louisville pictures. The location is unbeatable as it is directly adjacent to 4th street live. Overall our experience at the Seelbach was perfect.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Concierge Level at a minimum to take advantage of the lounge which includes the $2.00...

Website pictures are very misleading concerning the rooms. My room barely fit a queen bed and you could barely move around in the bathroom.

I would definitely ask at check-in the size of the room you are getting.

Your best bet is to stay at the Marriott or the Hyatt where you know what you will be getting.

I only stayed one night because I could not handle the room/bathroom size.

Stayed here for a wedding in May and it was a great experience.
Beautiful hotel in a FANTASTIC location. It is a great hotel to wander through and Fitzgerald mentions it in "The Great Gatsby" as the locale for Daisy's wedding.
Parking was expensive, but to be expected in a central downtown location.
The hotel bar was good and on the bourbon tour. (Try it!)
Only complaint would be the hotel room service and breakfast. Mediocre at best.

We checked in on a Saturday and left on a Monday. They allowed us late check-out. We payed with HIltonHonors points (35K per night).

Check-in
Got here after a long ride and, unfortunately, the check-in desk was packed. There were two guys dealing with customers, but one of the customers was really upset about something. The other guy dealt with us eventually. (There were multiple weddings coming in/going out too). From the time he greeted us to giving us our room key took maybe one and a half minutes. Friendly and expedient. Valet was $25 which is very high. We only did it the first night as we realized street parking is very easy and there are $5 parking lots within a block in either direction.

Room
We stayed in a king room on the 4th floor with a view of nothing special. The room was really quite nice. The bed was big with nice linens and lots of pillows. The TV was high-def and large. The bathroom was really well-appointed with very nice toiletries. Overall, it seemed the room and bathroom were recently renovated. The A/C was very effective (outside temperature was over 100F so it was working overtime).

Gym
We went to the gym on Sunday morning. It's got a lot of equipment for the size of the hotel and is open 24 hours. And it's free. Good equipment and TVs; water and towels available for free as well. Small thing: there's no bench press, which is kind of a gym staple.

Conclusion
We paid with Hilton points so I'm hesitant to say how good a value it is with "real money." That said, the hotel was surprisingly very nice. It was our first time in Louisville and we were really pleased with the room, location and level of luxury of the Seelbach. Additionally, the service was outstanding and very courteous. I'd highly recommend this for people visiting Louisville.

We stopped at the Seelbach on our way back home, it was a beautiful hotel! We ended up booking the 7th floor which is a privately accessed floor, the room was huge and beautiful. The staff was friendly and encouraged us to tour the hotel, we took advantaged of this and toured it all the way down to the rathskeller on the lower floor. With it being right by fourth street live, we figured we'd hear the noise coming from all the bars, we didn't. we slept like complete babies. We had no noise from the room beside us or even the people above us. The room was super clean, the windows had big windown boxes on top and there wasn't even any dust on the top. The cleaning staff must take their job seriously, which is something you can hardly find. The only thing i could recommend is that they put a mini freg and microwave in all the rooms. We will be back to this beautiful hotel sometime soon!
