Owner description: The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum is a historic, Victorian mansion located in the heart of Old Louisville on St. James Court. It is one of the finest examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and was the masterpiece of famed local architect Arthur Loomis of Clarke & Loomis. Surrounded by a beautiful courtyard neighborhood at the center of the largest collection of Victorian Homes in the US, "Conrad's Castle" featured all the latest innovations of its day, including interior plumbing and electric lighting. Known for its beautiful woodwork and parquet floors, this massive Bedford limestone home, covered with gargoyles, beautiful archways, and elaborate stone designs, incorporated 7 types of hardwoods and magnificent stained glass windows in the interior design, making it one of the most stunning homes in Old Louisville. The Museum has been lovingly restored to the Edwardian Age, housing a massive collection of period items including many original pieces, and stands as a testament to the abundant lifestyle of the owners, two of Louisville's most prominent businessmen and entrepreneurs, Theophile Conrad and William E. Caldwell. Step back in time as you learn more about the era, the neighborhood, and the families who lived here. **The House offers tours Wednesday through Friday and on Sundays at 1 pm and 3 pm and on Saturdays at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. For security reasons we do not offer self-guided tours, we only offer guided tours at the stated times. Tour availability is on a first come, first serve basis, we do not take reservations for groups of less than 10 people. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the door 30 minutes prior to each tour. Advanced reservations are required for groups of 10 or more.Ticket costs are Adults-$10 Seniors & Military-$8 Students-$6 Children under the age of 5 are free. ***On the 3rd Thursday of every month the museum also offers extended tour times at 5pm & 7pm for our 3rd Thursday Twilight Tours. Our tours last between 60-90 minutes as our trained tour guides take guests back in time through this informative tour of the home's 3 floors set up with original family pieces circa 1908. Donations are greatly appreciated as this is a 501(c)3 non-profit. More information on the museum and our special events can be found by visiting our website. I didn't know going in to it how beautiful and historic everything would be! I loved seeing all of the original owners belongings. The best part was having tour from someone who actually was related to the original owners.

“Great architecture, tour guide, and experience!”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

My mom and I visited the house on our trip to KY and it is definitely a must see. 1st the neighborhood it is in is GORGEOUS! Give youself some time to walk around before or after your tour. Our tour guide, Barb, was excellent! She is actually the great-grandaughter of Mr. Caldwell and the tour had personal touches which was a real delight. The tour was very informative and the house was absolutely stunning. You can tell they cherish this house and keep it in great condition. I would highly recommend visiting this house/museum and please make an extra donation to help keep it in the great condition it is in. Thanks Barb for making this experience great!!

“Conrad Caldwell House a true delight!”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

This beautiful Victorian home built in 1895 offers tours and is definitely not to be missed. The parquet floors are exquisite, each representing a different quilt pattern using a variety of woods. The home is lovingly maintained with many interesting artifacts from the time. Also of interest was the third floor museum depicting Louisville's pivotal role in the Civil War as well as pictures of the 1883 Louisville Exposition which featured the new Edison lights! While the website gives times for tours, on busy holiday weekends there are often extra ones added. The area has many magnificent homes along a shady avenue and is a delight, even on the warmest day.

“Beautiful example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture!!”
Reviewed May 14, 2013 via mobile

I recently visited this home while visiting Louisville. This home situated in Old Louisville, a veritable treasure trove of beautiful historic homes was a delight. While the homes owners story was not that unusual, the homes interiors are extremely well preserved. Of particular note is the dramatic two story stairway. Tours are daily at one and three PM.

“one of the best victorian homes ive been to”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

The home was absolutely beautiful. We arrived late to the last tour because because of traffic and the people were so nice they gave us a private tour. The tour guide was also very imformative. The home is well worth the visit.
