This is my fourth visit to the Gasthaus so my impressions are based on all these visits. Outside appearance is deceiving as this is located in a strip mall. Inside is best described as cozy with lots of unique wall coverings and paraphernalia to give a German feel. The dress is casual. Food and service are outstanding. Great selection of beer and also hot spiced wine in cold months. There are the standards on the menu and always a special. I have always followed the waitress recommendations and have never been disappointed. Deserts are very authentic German so save room.

Gasthaus is not only one of the top 5 restaurants in Louisville, but probably the top German restaurant in the Midwest. And because of this, it is one of my favorite places to eat. You can't go wrong here. It's like being in Germany, it is family owned and operated by the Greipels. Entrees usually are priced at about $20 and for most of us in this recession, it is pricey. But if you have a special occasion, especially around the holidays, this is well worth the money. Everything is done right.

The cream of potato soup with weiner sausages is probably the most fantastic soup I have ever had and will ever have in my life. It is to die for, bursting with rich flavor.

As far as entrees, you can't pick a bad meal! I love the chicken ragout -- the spatzle is amazing! Jager Schnitzel and Sauerbraten are mouthwatering.

Do not make the mistake of not ordering dessert. You must order dessert. The black forest cake is scrumptious and you have not truly had it until you have had it here!

It is highly recommended that you have reservations.

This is by far the best German restaurant I have been to in this country, even Milwaukie, Seattle have nothing to match. It is a bit pricy but worth every bite. The only other comment: decor is a bit kitschy...just what Americans think of Germany - Dirndl, Lederhosen, Beer steins...we are a modern country and that image just is SOOO outdated.

The Gasthaus is THE best German restaurant in town, and is an experience in itself. It's a must-visit location in Louisville. Our family chooses it again and again to celebrate special occasions. Make sure you get a reservation or you won't get a seat. It's owned and operated by a German family, who wait the tables and make all the food from scratch. It's phenomenal -- especially the home-made desserts. Get the apple struedel! Everything on the menu is amazing, and the ambiance is second to none. They have a chalet inside the restaurant! It's a must-go.

The Gasthaus German Restaurant is a small restaurant in a small strip mall. Upon entering the restaurant, you lose yourself in the decor and feel as though you may be in Germany. The decor is very quaint, with small dining rooms, separated by walls and roofs that make you think of Gingerbread Houses or Black Forest Coo Coo Clocks.
The menu offers several choices of beef, pork, and veal dishes as well as a couple of vegetarian options. The food is authentic German and is rich with various sauces and spices. We have eaten at this restaurant several times and have tried many different dishes here. All of them have been memorable. Last evening we had the suerbraten and pork schnitzel. Both entrees were fantastic. The meat dishes come with one side. The spaetzel is wonderful as is the red cabbage. Potato dumplings are very different and come as 2 large balls, somewhat sticky in nature. If you're adventurous, give them a try, otherwise stick with the spaetzel.
The desserts are homeade and to die for. They are so popular, in the times we have eaten there, many have already sold out by the time we were ready to order dessert.
The wine and beer list has many German offerings.
The restaurant isn't cheap, but the portions are nice sized, the food is wonderful and the service is great. The whole experience is well worth the price.
