Great ambiance and quick access to 21c hotel, but truly mediocre food. I ordered a soup and received a bowl of watered down barbeque sauce. Inedible.

A large group of us dined at St. Charles Exchange the same evening that the U. of Louisville was playing in the semi-final round of the NCAA basketball tournament. The result: several no-shows among the restaurant staff, with the remaining staff under pressure to handle the load. Despite some confusion about the drinks and bar orders, we did manage to get a good meal, and our server got us out on time to make the curtain at Actors Theatre, a few blocks away. The menu might be described as "southern-influenced contemporary cuisine," which is fairly typical of the current Louisville dining scene. The chops and lamb shank were generously-sized and especially well-received by members of our party.

I recently had a chance to eat at this restaurant before a Who concert in downtown Louisville, KY. Louisville is quickly becoming a foodie mecca of the South and this restaurant is partly responsible for that. As a matter of fact, the chef and mixologist of the restaurant have been invited to cook at the James Beard House in NYC in the next few weeks. St. Charles Exchange is located in a remodeled old building directly across the street from 21C (one of the coolest hotels in the U.S.). While the dining area is beautiful we chose to eat at the enormous and beautiful bar. The food was top notch and the drinks were excellent. They have impressive wine, beer and bourbon lists and the food menu changes periodically. I will definitely return.

My husband and I were looking forward to a late lunch after visiting a Main Street museum. Unfortunately the kitchen closed at two and did not reopen until four for appetizers and five for dinner. We were very disappointed.
