Owner description: The Waverly Hills Sanatorium is on the U.S. National Register of Historical Places. The massive five story hospital was built in 1926 and sits atop Waverly Hill today. It housed 400 patients and was one of the largest facilities of its kind. Waverly served the community through decades of the worse TB outbreak in the country. After closing in 1961, due to the introduction of life saving antibiotics, the hospital reopened in 1962 as "Woodhaven Geriatric Center" which operated the facility until 1982 when it was closed by the state. Ravaged by years of neglect, the present owners have breathed new life into the building by conducting tours though the facility in effort to restore it to a useful asset for the community once again. Waverly has earned her place as one of the most haunted places in the country and has been host to many films and TV shows. During tour season (March – August) Waverly offers several options of visiting. *2hr. Introductory Paranormal Tour which includes a 20 film then a walk through the building.*2hr. Historical walk through tour held one Sunday each month*Public or Private overnight sessions for ghost hunting enthusiasts. For all tour or overnight reservations or inquiries contact the office open daily 9am to 5pm Monday - Friday.

I recently took my 14 year old granddaughter and two of her friends to do the two hour guided tour of Waverly. You do have to make reservations in advance and your money will not be refunded. So make sure you can make the time and date. Our tour began at 8pm on Saturday night. The guide had been doing these tours for several years and had several paranormal experiences. Our group was large (about 20+people). In order to have the best experience the group needs to be quite,so you will "feel" the presence of the people. Our group had a few chatty Cathys but for the most part people were cooperative. The history of the sanatorium is explained as you are touring as well as some of the experiences people have had while there. The girls saw "shadow people" , but for the most part nothing extraodrinary happened.Be aware that you are touring in the dark. You may use your flashlights when in the stairwells. So if you don't like dark places, this is not for you.Overall, I think it is very interesing experience ,and one that I would do agian. I do think the experence would be much better if the groups could be smaller. It was diffficult to spend much time in certain places because of the group size. You have to cover 5 floors in two hours. Bring a flashlight, comfortabe walking shoes, and dress weather appropriate. There is not heat or air and most windows have no glass.

Due to having 13 year old boys we were only able to book the Two- Hour PUBLIC Paranormal / Historical GUIDED Tour. Even so we were very excited to visit this historical place however that excitement was short lived once the tour began.

We booked the 10pm - midnight tour. With the exception of one, our guides were very impersonal. I understand they are volunteers but perhaps they need to rethink volunteering if being nice to people is such a chore. We expected it to be dark at that time but did not expect that we would not be able to use our small flashlights to see around so basically we spent 80% of the time in complete darkness, unable to enjoy the magnificence of this building. I must say when the flashes started going off and we could actually see the place was just spectacular. We were only able to use our camera flashes in certain rooms at certain times and considering the size of our group we were not given ample time to take pics once we were given the go ahead. We paid for a 2 hour tour which started 15 min late and ended 15 min early so received only an 1 1/2 hour tour and the guides were a bit crabby as they "herded" us around. What a disappointment.

We had already made plans to return with adults only and do an overnight tour. I hope to have a completely different experience and be able to write the review I thought I was going to write this time.

Oh yeah, make sure you call for directions. Several of us on our tour met on the road as we were trying to find it. GPS takes you there but it sure doesn't look like it as it appears you are entering a golf course.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium is an amazing place. The history of the hospital is well documented and the volunteers there were great. We did an overnight private ghosthunt and it was amazing. It is important to feel 'safe' in these types of places, and we definitly did. I would recommend this place as a must see to anyone.

This tour was interesting and some people were definitely scared. But some people were definitely loud and annoying, ruining the ambiance. I'd go again, but on a more private tour.

This huge, ominous, place is rated as one of the most haunted places in America. In it's various incarnations as a sanitarium, TB hospital, and an old folks home, over 60,000 people have died here. If you enjoy being spooked, you should put this place on your to-do list.
