Before significant renovations a couple of years ago, I considered Churchill Downs to be pretty much of a dump - dark, dreary and dirty inside. The renovations have significantly improved the cosmetic appearance of the place, but the changes come at a price for the consumer. Entrace fees are much higher and food and beverages are ridiculously expensive. Large crowds generate large amounts of trash, they don't do a very good job of keeping up with it. They market the track to fleece out of town customers, most natives like myself know better and spend our entertainment dollars elsewhere.

We spent 3 1/2 hours just touring the indoor exhibits of the Kentucky Derby Museum and then the simple guided tour of Churchill Downs. Our guide was fun, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. We also ate lunch at the museum cafe and the food was excellent and inexpensive. Great mint juleps.

Went there on a non-race day and took the tour. I'm not a horse racing fan, but touring this historic attraction was well worth the time and effort. The museum was very interesting. Being able to tour the facility without the crowds was very cool.

The atmosphere is GREAT! Clean, good service. Love the horse racing! I have never participated in any type of horse racing before moving to Kentucky. This is a great attraction for people are visiting the area. Not to mention the adreline rush you get from watching the horse round the last bend! LOL!

I already love the Kentucky Derby and to walk on the track and see the Paddock, the feeling is amazing. There also is one of the retired horses staying there that you can pet and hear his history. A different horse is traded out at different times. This was worth my trip to Louisville!
The gift shop is not large but it is expensive. Go in there just to see the small pewter mint julep cup for $50. Shop around they do have a nice variety of things.
